Thread Title: "Additional Security Measures"
AuctionArmsCeo Unfortunately, we've had to implement a new security measure which we hope won't inconvenience too many folks. In closed auctions, we've now screened all bidder nicknames, except to those that have participated in the auction. In other words, if you're a bidder, you can see your nickname and the seller's nickname. If you're the seller, you can see all the bidders. If you're not participating in the auction, you can only see the seller.

The reason we chose to implement this change is because of fraud. "Black Hats" were contacting bidders by taking their nicknames and adding an @aol.com or @hotmail.com, or @yahoo.com to their existing nicknames. They were impersonating the seller, and asking for money, stating that the high bidder had backed out.

The best way to combat this, is to make it hard for the fraud to contact the high bidder be masking the high bidder's nickname.

Let me know what you think, and thanks for your patience.

(no avatar) I think post # 30 said it all. "Balanced against the "need" of other users to see information on auction participants in auctions they are not involved in we found no justifiable "need" for non-participants to view this information. Thanks again to all who have contributed to this discussion." Need I say more???? Wguy

(no avatar) Joes Custom Guns: I'm not sure why you had to say, "Maybe you need to do your homework". That's a phrase usually directed to people who don't know what they're talking about. If you read by posts carefully, you will find that I am always inviting people to set me straight. I don't profess to be a Know-it-all. I only try to learn or to offer suggestions and comments to help make AA more friendly and successful. So, with that said, what you're telling me is that you have found a way to make a posting in "My Closed Bids" with your seller information. Correct?

Bubba J ODOTER: Read Post #5 in (Seller Forum)--->(How long do you wait?) This should help you out if you think about it a bit.

brainaxe So once again the people who follow the rules get the shaft. And the dedicated scammer still can get the info they need to scam. There is another way as well! If a scammer simply bids at the begining of all PENNY auctions and all low STARTING BID auctions, they will be included in the auction, and will see all the bidders names just as before. This new rule only hurts honest members, and helps no-one.---I think the answer is to hold everyone to the same standard of "NO EMAILS IN THE HANDLES!"

gov2mod brainaxe, Gee, it's just like gun control laws isn't it? The honest gun owners follow the law and the criminal don't. What a coincidence!

Bubba J There is another site that I believe hides all bidders names until the auction closes. Of course, my thinking could possibly be flawed. Senior moment you know. =O)

(no avatar) I am not a high volume bidder and do not sell. I scan the auctions routinely lookng for specific items in my collecting fields. As so many often say this is a community of sorts and I know who will often bid and which bidders are generally serious. I check all (unknown to me) bidders feedback and history so I know if I am bidding against fellow serious collectors who may go higher or whether dealers or resellers. By that, I know whether my maximium proxy will be enough. If I believe a fellow bidder in my field is more determined, or is a fellow collector with a history of strategic sniping, or is one who seems to have a history of starting off a session but never rebidding or returning, I will alter my strategy or withhold my bid, especially if it is an item I may find from other local or collector sources. Anonymous bidding was why I stopped doing eBay. I have had very good luck on this site with some great items, and have highly recommended it to other collectors as a source to seek some unusual stuff, but this eBayesque "solution" may mean reconsiderations on both items.

brainaxe gov2mod--That's exactly what I was going to say! It's like "Gun Laws"! But I ran out of time that day. -- Also, I enjoy watching auctions that have bidders I know in them. I often put guns on my "WATCH LIST" with no intent to bid just to see if so-and-so wins! It's like a mini horse race, or baseball game! Just a couple weeks back axolotl just missed winning a set of nickel pistols that I had put on my list! When I saw his bid I started rooting for him to win! ((OK so my life is fairly empty...It's all I've got!!!))) Change this rule back!! jm2c

(no avatar) Well, I just got through perusing the penny auctions, and am happy to say that I can still view the bid history on the open ones. Might not last much longer, open auctions might be next on the list. Wguy
