Thread Title: "Additional Security Measures"
AuctionArmsCeo Unfortunately, we've had to implement a new security measure which we hope won't inconvenience too many folks. In closed auctions, we've now screened all bidder nicknames, except to those that have participated in the auction. In other words, if you're a bidder, you can see your nickname and the seller's nickname. If you're the seller, you can see all the bidders. If you're not participating in the auction, you can only see the seller.

The reason we chose to implement this change is because of fraud. "Black Hats" were contacting bidders by taking their nicknames and adding an @aol.com or @hotmail.com, or @yahoo.com to their existing nicknames. They were impersonating the seller, and asking for money, stating that the high bidder had backed out.

The best way to combat this, is to make it hard for the fraud to contact the high bidder be masking the high bidder's nickname.

Let me know what you think, and thanks for your patience.

(no avatar) Here are some questions that I have for the Staff at AA. I do not NOT want the answers. 1] How many sellers/buyers dislike the new system?___________. 2] How many sellers/buyers does AA have active?_______________. 3] How many sellers/buyers came from or still use EBAY, where this bidder hiding is prevailing?____________. 4]Has hiding done what was expected of it?_________. Just some things for you "underworked" guys at AA to think about. bob

AA-bob

1. Unknown

2. Proprietary information.

3. Unknown

4. Yes. Reports of the attempted scams have gone from 5 to 10 a day on my email and phone alone to zero since we instituted the change. It has been effective for it's intended purpose.

That said, understand these miserable .... (fill in the blank with your favorite invective) are moving targets. They will continue to poke around the edges looking for a feature or security flaw they can use. As they bring out new strategies, be assured we'll continue to counter them to continue to keep AuctionArms the safe and secure site it is.

Petesguns Manny, your idea of having to have an account to get info is a good one, BUT, anyone with ANY name or personal info, even Elmer Fudd, can create an acccount with bogus info. SO.......with that in mind, unless you also institute a screening mechanism for new accounts, nothing will improve.

AuctionArmsCeo We screen all new users. That's why requiring registration is a good idea. Without tipping our hand about what we look for, we also have the ability to block entire countries from completing their registration - without relying on what they tell us. Yeah, it's awesome.
