Thread Title: "Additional Security Measures"
AuctionArmsCeo Unfortunately, we've had to implement a new security measure which we hope won't inconvenience too many folks. In closed auctions, we've now screened all bidder nicknames, except to those that have participated in the auction. In other words, if you're a bidder, you can see your nickname and the seller's nickname. If you're the seller, you can see all the bidders. If you're not participating in the auction, you can only see the seller.

The reason we chose to implement this change is because of fraud. "Black Hats" were contacting bidders by taking their nicknames and adding an @aol.com or @hotmail.com, or @yahoo.com to their existing nicknames. They were impersonating the seller, and asking for money, stating that the high bidder had backed out.

The best way to combat this, is to make it hard for the fraud to contact the high bidder be masking the high bidder's nickname.

Let me know what you think, and thanks for your patience.

(no avatar) I am not a high volume bidder and do not sell. I scan the auctions routinely lookng for specific items in my collecting fields. As so many often say this is a community of sorts and I know who will often bid and which bidders are generally serious. I check all (unknown to me) bidders feedback and history so I know if I am bidding against fellow serious collectors who may go higher or whether dealers or resellers. By that, I know whether my maximium proxy will be enough. If I believe a fellow bidder in my field is more determined, or is a fellow collector with a history of strategic sniping, or is one who seems to have a history of starting off a session but never rebidding or returning, I will alter my strategy or withhold my bid, especially if it is an item I may find from other local or collector sources. Anonymous bidding was why I stopped doing eBay. I have had very good luck on this site with some great items, and have highly recommended it to other collectors as a source to seek some unusual stuff, but this eBayesque "solution" may mean reconsiderations on both items.

brainaxe gov2mod--That's exactly what I was going to say! It's like "Gun Laws"! But I ran out of time that day. -- Also, I enjoy watching auctions that have bidders I know in them. I often put guns on my "WATCH LIST" with no intent to bid just to see if so-and-so wins! It's like a mini horse race, or baseball game! Just a couple weeks back axolotl just missed winning a set of nickel pistols that I had put on my list! When I saw his bid I started rooting for him to win! ((OK so my life is fairly empty...It's all I've got!!!))) Change this rule back!! jm2c

(no avatar) Well, I just got through perusing the penny auctions, and am happy to say that I can still view the bid history on the open ones. Might not last much longer, open auctions might be next on the list. Wguy

(no avatar) Yes, I have to agree that it is a sad day for Auction Arms when they have to HOPE FOR CHANGE by infringing on the system and making so many faithful members inconvienced in the format they have grown to love and be a part of. It is more than just a slap in the face to all the "family members" here that have made Auction Arms what it is today.

If this was something that was happening (people sending payment to scammers) to the majority of the members, I could see the need for something quick to be done. However, I have not heard of one member that was actually taken. Anybody know of some loser that actually fell for the scam? Anybody? Manny? Bob? Marcus? Mike? Anybody I forgot?

Really guys......Do you really feel this is an attribute to your members that made you who you are today?......I think not!

PLEASE.....you tried it and you have our feedback on this system control and I must say it has no ability to generate income for AA like the banners apparently did so will you listen to us now?

WE DON'T LIKE IT...AND WE ARE ASKING YOU TO RESTORE THE SYSTEM .....the one that has kept us loyal to you.

The family here has spoken and would like to remain in the family and have some voice in making you the Best Internet Firearms Auction Site of all time. Please don't ignore us. P.S. We love you.....:)

(no avatar) AA-bob: You mentioned that AA would like to have all buyers and sellers make positive contact after the auctions. I must say that I attempted, and I repeat attempted, to call a seller years ago after an auction closed to clarify some information and never did get to talk to him, personally. He was either never available or didn't answer the phone. I eventually sent payment hoping for the best. (This was prior to the "My Closed Bids, Contact Seller" feature being a part of AA.) If you check my feedback, you will see that I make it a practice to send payment very quickly and I want to have the payment instructions available as soon as possible. Due to that bad experience in trying to call the seller, I have never tried to do so on any auctions since. I have been an AA member for 7 years. Consequently, it would be better if AA worked on creating a more secure system that is scammer free yet gives the buyer the information they need in a reasonable amount of time after the auction closes. Hiding bidders nicknames doesn't accomplish all of that. Apparently, as mentioned in this thread, at least one member has found ways to defeat portions of the site. If this is true, I think it is only right that they explain what they know to you or Manny and give you the opportunity to fix it.

Bubba J Is anyone else experiencing difficulty with uploading pictures using the new sysytem? I have been trying to do so since early last night with no success at all. The old system seems to work, however, I wish to upload and post more than ten pictures in one auction. IS THIS SYSTEM BROKE?

Hagrid I have been trying to contact AA for two weeks. I have mailed bob@auctionarms.com. Support and a couple of post in threads and still am talking to myself. I wish to change my user name here to comply with your security concerns. Maybe your not as concerned as you wish to appear to be. trapper
