Thread Title: "Hacker Attack on Auction Arms"
AuctionArmsCeo On the morning of the 18th of August, it appears we had a hacker attack where malicious code was inserted into some closed auctions that could potentially install a virus on your machine. While the attack was detected and corrected almost immediately, if you were:
  1. looking at closed auctions on the morning of the 18th and
  2. your computer doesn't have updated virus protection (shame on you), you are at risk.

If you have updated virus protection, you have nothing to worry about.

The virus in question is believed to be a URL redirect virus, or a trojan that changes your home page in an attempt to increase traffic to the hacker's website. The impact on the Auction Arms website included the removal of some closed auctions to prevent the spread of the virus, most of which have been restored. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you, and will keep you informed if further details reveal themselves. Thanks again.

circlei There should be a law that allows "HACKERS" when caught, to be HACKED with a Mexican Yucca chopping blade. Don't mind me, I'm just a grumpy ol gun dealer that is tired of Jack-a*s-holes that constantly SCREW with folks. What would happen to these pricks in China? Maybe we can learn a few things from the Chi-coms.

(no avatar) Foxfire, I have found Avast to be every bit as good as McAffee and less intrusive. However, the free version is only an anti-virus. If the McAffee you are using is the full security suite with firewall and anti spyware software, then Avast will not replace all it's functions. If the version you have is just anti-virus, then it's going to perform every bit as well. Hope that helps.

AuctionArmsCeo RetirementJob, it's no a hacker attack - but a routine error. The front page is actually composed of a number of files, one of them being the one you mentioned. If you happend to hit the front page at the time the file is being refreshed, you can sometimes get that error. But 99.999% of the time, you never see it because the replacement of that page happens so quickly. If you see it again, just hit REFRESH on your browser and it should go away.

Bubba J Frankfort; texastradingpost: THANKS for the input guys. My McAfee is virus protection only. I had all of the other whistles and bells at first but was able to replace them with basic free ones from MicroSoft and other places. I may give this a try. Again. THANKS!!

(no avatar) Well, three weeks later, after wiping out two computers and reinstalling all programs, we got rid of it. $500 worth of IT labor...I beleive the trojan was named virtuamonde....I reccomend Spybot Search and Destroy along with an antivirus program (I run AVG) but bots bypass that.....
