Thread Title: "Announcement - 10 Minute Rule"

| (no avatar) | In the last year I have purchased around 30 or so firearms from a lot of different sellers on aa. I have never had a problem with a single firearm, shipment, or anything else. I would like to thank all of the sellers for their honesty and a lot of fun that I have had bidding on firearms and ammo in the last minutes of auctions. I hope this site will see the error of it's ways and return to being an AUCTION one day. Well it's been nice, so thanks everyone and goodbye. |

brainaxe - Are you sure your girlfriend wasn't the actual inventor of the Pet Rock? And if those were hash brownies, then you had a Pet Rock that was stoned. |

Schuylerboy- Before you go....consider this scenario.
The old way, with the timed auction, you could try to "snipe" by a last second bid of what you believe to be your best shot, or highest, max. bid. Right?
If no one else bid during your snipe attempt, you simply won the auction for exactly one "bid increment" over your or the last bid. Right?
If someone had bid during your snipe attempt, they would either have a bid that was higher or lower than your snipe attempt. -- If they were higher; you lose! But only by one bid increment (or less) over your max (snipe) bid. - If they were lower, then you win! Again, only by one bid increment.! Right?
Well, what happens with the 10 min rule? -- If your last, highest, max bid is made, just as in a snipe attempt: if no one bids, you win! And you win at just one bid increment over the last bid; just as before!
If someone does bid in the last 10 mins; you have already determined you are at your max! So the fact that you now actually have 10 minutes more to increase your bid, doesn't matter to you! Because you have already set your max! Right?
Your max bid is what you believe is the most you will bid for that gun! So you are either outbid or NOT outbid. There is no difference. And unless you change your mind about how much you are willing to bid, or other bidders bid higher, it is the same result!
At your max - YOU decide what YOU will pay! - Whether you sniped it in the last second! or max bidded as the last bid of the day!
I was against this change too, at first. But I have simply "seen through it". There is no "there, there"!
Hope you stay. |

As you all can well imagine, we gave this change a lot of thought before making it. I realize that our previous policy of having auctions end at a specific time, regardless of demand for that item, was beloved by some. But in the end, it came down to a question of inventory. Do we have the items for sale at Auction Arms that buyers are interested in purchasing? Buyer behavior, we've learned over the years, has shown us that price is not as important as merchandise availability. Buyers just aren't as price sensitive in their decision to buy online as we thought. Yes, there are some buyers out there who are real "bargain hunters". But most are more interested finding what they're looking for. And if that item isn't available, they go somewhere else. That's where the sellers come in. Sellers ARE sensitive in getting the best available prices. And if the perception among sellers is that they can get better price for their items somewhere else, they'll go there. It's a business decision, plain and simple. Who can blame them? So after some thought, I came to the conclusion that I owed it to our sellers to make sure they're getting the best possible prices for their items. The biggest obstacle to that objective seemed to be our policy of cutting off auctions while bidding was still taking place. The solution was simple - extend the auction when a bid is placed in the last ten minutes - to give everyone who might want to bid an opportunity to bid. Posts in this forum to the contrary, the positive support expressed in emails for my decision to make this change has been overwhelmingly positive, by both sellers AND buyers. Sellers will be getting better prices for their merchandise, keeping them happy and willing to list with us. Surprisingly, most buyers who have emailed me, have been pleased with this decision because while not being as price sensitive, they didn't like being "sniped", and losing the item because of an inability to bid. We may have inadvertently been driving buyers away with the negative experience of losing an item - an item they were willing to pay more money for, but were unable to because we closed the auction and cut off bidding. Thanks for your patience and loyalty, as we introduce these changes to continue improving Auction Arms for the benefit of all.

Manny, How many times have AA staff and sellers said "Place your max bid and let the proxy bid for you.If you are out bid then you move on to the next one?"Those who lost an item because of a snipe were snipepers and pissed off because they got caught with their pants down. If a seller has an item on auction that has stirred genuine interest, it will sell for the best price it can bring. If the item is a little odd, in lets say caliber, then the interest wans and the price drops. That is where the snipper shines. The fact is, if the sellers wish to make more money, list better products and more of them. There is a CZ redhead O/U on the scroll that is started at 650.00 with a buy it now of 775.00. They list for 850-1000.00 new. This is a good buy but it has one bid at 650.00. The buy it now would be a decent deal but there is no buyer interest. The 10 minute rule isn't going to help this one nor any other that the buyers don't want. You can lead a horse to water.... | (no avatar) | Manny--- I have not talked to a single buyer that likes the ten miute rule. You're statement that buyers might be happier because they don't like being sniped is just about the silliest thing I have ever heard. All buyers know about the PROXY bid. Your decision to go this way is really none of my business but you stating buyers are for it is simply not believable-----Thanks |

And the buyers who like it should have the option of a 10-minute rule and those who don't like it shouldn't be subject to it. |
