Thread Title: "Server Outage....."
AuctionArmsCeo Our apologies. We've had some difficulty with a database server, but seem to have ironed things out. After pounding on a machine in our data center for the last twelve hours, I seem to have lost some coherence, so please bear with me. We were forced to restore from a backup taken in the early AM hours of the 15th, so if you posted an auction at all yesterday, I'm sorry to report that we were unable to recover that data. All auctions that were scheduled to end during our downtime have been rescheduled to end at 8PM, this evening.

If you submitted a bid between 2AM and 4PM on the 15th, please take a look at the auction to make sure that the High Bidder is correctly displayed. If you see anything unusual, please give us a holler and we'll make it right.

Thankyou for bearing with us as we get this all sorted out. Everything is currently almost back to normal. As always, if you're a user who had a problem that needs our attention because of this outage, we'll work to make it right. Don't hesitate to call.

(no avatar) Just had a Dutch auction end (#6886262) and although there was a bidder shown in the bid history link, did not get an email that someone bid and no way to contact bidder. Rich

(no avatar) Is everything back up?....I just got an email from a buyer who said he only placed one bid of $10.00 on my auction # 6874947, but I show 5 bids of $450.00. Also on the auction it lists my feedback no. as 134, but it is updated to 136 on the feedback page. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...

AuctionArmsCeo ibuyguns@earthlink.net: I've removed some of the bids and brought it back to some semblance of sanity. We're still dealing with some oddness, but should have stuff back in shape in another day or so. If you see anything else odd, bring it up here and I'll stick my head back under the hood. Thanks for your patience.

AuctionArmsCeo ramlaser: Even thought it showed an odd bid in the bid history, there weren't any actual bidder in that auction. You haven't been charged for that auction either. If you see anything else, give me a holler.

AuctionArmsCeo For those who want a more detailed explanation of our woes, here goes.

We have a very nice database server that decided it was time for a vacation. This server included a database for current running auctions, and also archived auctions. All bids are stored on another server. When the server with the database of current auctions decided to take a dump, our only option was to restore using a backup taken about 20 hours earlier. Because the rebuilt database was missing about 20 hours of time (new auctions), and records of the bids are stored on another server, any seller that had created an auction after the backup and before the crash, lost that auction.

Due to how our auctions are run, whenever a seller creates an auction, a bid representing the seller's starting price is also created on another table, along with the new item number generated during the item creation process. When we restored from a backup, we essentially reset the order of item numbers back to just before the backup itself was created.

So what you have is a series of item numbers used up for about a 20 hour period while auctions are being created, and then you have the current auctions database being reset back to a time prior to those 20 hours worth of auctions (and item numbers) being created. Then, after the restore, a new batch of auctions gets created, and the database generates that same series of item numbers again, but for a completely different set of auctions.

I'm sure you can see our problem.

We have a 20 hour overlap of auction numbers for a bunch of listed items. Ugh.

So I set off on the herculean task of writing a process that will examine each auction, and try to eliminate bids for the new set of auction that we actually from a prior auction that was created after our last backup, but before the servers crash. I was able to fix the majority of them, but a number of auctions didn't meet the criteria I set up for the screening process, and slipped through.

So that's the saga that kept us sweating for the last couple of days.

If you see anything funky in the bidding history, give us a holler and we'll sort it out on a case-by-case basis. This should iron itself out as old auctions flush out of the database, and new ones are added. We've already seen a dramatic decrease in the amount of oddballness. But I really appreciate your patience, and I know we're just about done with it. Thanks again.

AA-bob Shooter-00, nothing should be interfering on this end. If problem persists let support@auctionarms.com know. Copy and paste any error codes you may get into an email to that address.
