Thread Title: "Additional Security Measures"
AuctionArmsCeo Unfortunately, we've had to implement a new security measure which we hope won't inconvenience too many folks. In closed auctions, we've now screened all bidder nicknames, except to those that have participated in the auction. In other words, if you're a bidder, you can see your nickname and the seller's nickname. If you're the seller, you can see all the bidders. If you're not participating in the auction, you can only see the seller.

The reason we chose to implement this change is because of fraud. "Black Hats" were contacting bidders by taking their nicknames and adding an @aol.com or @hotmail.com, or @yahoo.com to their existing nicknames. They were impersonating the seller, and asking for money, stating that the high bidder had backed out.

The best way to combat this, is to make it hard for the fraud to contact the high bidder be masking the high bidder's nickname.

Let me know what you think, and thanks for your patience.

(no avatar) I'm just a lowly Professional Engineer, so maybe it takes me a little longer to understand the original issue. As I mentioned earlier, I don't understand buyers not confirming the mailing address of the seller. After a bid closes, the buyer can view his "My Closed Bids" listing and click on "Winner, Contact Seller". That brings up the seller's name, email address, city and state, fax number, telephone numbers, and company name if there is one. The only thing it does not have is the specific street number and street name. I am not sure why the street number and street name are not there. It is information that certainly could be accumulated over time. I'm going to get it from the seller in a few days anyway. So, leaving it out really doesn't protect anyone. I feel it should be included. AA should require that this information be kept current and the buyer should only send payment to this person....period. AA controls when this information is released to the buyer. So, what am I missing?

(no avatar) I like the new system. The seller should be the only one to see who is really bidding. I do not like the mention of using other people's auctions to weed out or block bidders from your future auctions. That is what the feedback is for. "preemptive" strikes rarely worked in the military and to block some one before you even take a bid or had dealings with stinks. I know TA might take offense to this statement, but I have to ask...why don't you leave feedback for your buyers?? If you use other peoples auctions to block people, shouldn't other sellers be able to see your input with your many sales here??? only 69% feedback left?? I hope I never get that busy selling here on AA. JMHO bob

WILLIE TA BABUN..I AM WELL ENOUGH TO DEFEND MYSELF..I HAVE SOLD OVER 2500 ITEMS ON AA. NOW MAYBE YOU MIGHT UNDERSTAND WHY I ONLY LEAVE FEEDBACK FOR THOSE THAT GIVE ME FEEDBACK! YUP I ONLY GOT 1450 FEEDBACKS WHEN I SHOULD HAVE OVER 2500... SO NOW WHAT DO YOU SAY MR. KNOW IT ALL! PUT YOURSELF IN MY SHOES AND THINK IT OVER. THEN YOU MIGHT BE THINKING LIKE ME.

(no avatar) I hope I NEVER think like you. I believe holding feedback "hostage" is wrong. and your self-proclaimed method of blocking bidders before hand sucks. You say you don;t leave feedback UNLESS you get it first, then how would other sellers "use" your system?? Your lack of posting feedback is limiting other sellers to use you as a "guiding" force as you use them. No I am not MR. KNOW IT ALL, but I strongly disagree with your way of posting feedback, but since it is your business, do as you please. I ask many questions here on AA to get a feel of what is right and wrong, and your "I'll trade you positive for positive" has never been used by me in over 12 years of internet sales, and NEVER will. Just last week I posted a question about an error on my feedback record that showed I missed posting 6 feedbacks, which I did leave. The buyers deserved positive because they did everything they were supposed to, and they got it. Not because they said first I was a "good boy" BOB

WILLIE TA BABUN.....JUST IN LAST 8 WEEKS I HAVE HAD SOME GOOD PEOPLE AND BAD PEOPLE WHO IF I LEFT FEEDBACK AS SOON AS I GOT FUNDS AND LEFT FEEDBACK I WOULD HAVE HAD TO HAVE AA CHANGE IT. DO YOU KNOW FIRST HAND WHAT A PAIN IN THE ASS THAT IS? WHEN YOU START DOING AS MUCH AS I DO THEN YOU CAN TALK ABOUT IT. END OF THIS CHANGING THE TOPIC ON THIS THREAD!

NOW I DO LOOK AT PEOPLES FEEDBACK AND YOU CAN GET A GENERAL IDEA HOW THEY DO BUSINESS BY LOOKING AT FEEDBACK. THREE WEEKS AGO I SAW A NEW BAD APPLE STARTING TO GO BAD AND I PUT BLOCK ON. HE ASKED WHY AND I TOLD HIM.. THE FOLLOWING WEEK HE WAS DISABLED. GUESS I SAVED A FEW AUCTIONS OF MINE BY DOING THAT AND NOT WASTING MY TIME.

(no avatar) WILLIE...Why don't you post as a buyer

Are you waiting for the SELLER to post FIRST????

Former Seller: babun(97-1-0) Post#19 - Posted: 02/23/2009 at 14:55:14
(no avatar) Then I could talk about it....Sir, before I turned over another internet seller membership {not gun related}, I had, to my business partner, I had left 3180 positive feedbacks. I amassed a total of 2890 positives in return. This was just an average, middle of the road, ratio for all sellers in my general "size". I know you do a good job here in all aspects on AA. But consider this: What if every buyer looking at your auctions knew that you had over 2500 sales but yet have "ONLY" 1450 positive feedbacks? Might they think {and wrongly I will add} that you are not a good person to deal with? I will always leave positive feedback as soon as the buyer fulfills his end. BOB

(no avatar) I never thought holding feedback hostage was right and have always left it as soon as the buyers had sent payment and all required paperwork as requested, but several of the last sales I have had resulted in no feedback received from the buyer. Just a thought, but I wonder how hard it would be for AA to monitor this and set up a reminder e-mail to the buyer with a link for them to post the the feedback. Seems like several of the buyers are confused as to how to leave feedback and by providing them with a reminder with a direct link might result in more feedback being left. JMHO
