This is a Hopkins & Allen Model 722 single-shot, rolling block which is a thumb operated .22 caliber rimfire rifle The Model 722 was introduced in the very late 1890's or 1900's. The top of the barrel is stamped "THE HOPKINS & ALLEN ARMS CO. NORWICH, CONN. U.S.A." The gun has a 19-1/4" barrel with open sights. The bore is a bit dark with some pitting but still retains decent rifling.
The barrel still shows a small amount of blue but has mostly turned patina. There is some rust pitting in the barrel, but none of it's too bad. There are a few remnants of case color left on the frame, otherwise the case is just about all gone. There are a few spots of surface rust and some pitting in the frame, but overall the metal on this gun is really in pretty good condition considering the gun's age (see photos).
The gun has a uncheckered walnut forend and stock. The wood appears to have it's original finish. There are some minor handling marks and a few scratches in the forend but no cracks. The stock also has a few minor handling marks with some scratches and a couple of small divots in the right-side of the stock. There is a thin gap between the stock and the tang on the right-side where the wood is slightly pulled-away from the frame, but no cracks in the stock. It's a minor gap between the stock and frame and possibly from the wood swelling just a bit over the years. The left-side of the stock has a few small spots of white paint, otherwise the stock is in good condition (see photos). L.O.P. is 13-3/8".
We test-fired this gun it functions properly, fires and extracts just fine. Overall this gun is in excellent condition mechanically and good to very good in appearance. Serial #NONE. STK. #12749.
This Model 722 would make an excellent vintage youth gun for a son, grandson or daughter starting out in the shooting sports or anyone looking to redo a vintage .22 single-shot rifle, they don't make 'em like this anymore!
