COLT ~ 1902 MILITARY .38 AUTOMATIC
RARE FACTORY ERROR!
GOOD SHAPE IN ORIGINAL BOX!...Mfd 1915
NO RESERVE!! Here's a neat item! This is a nice 102-year-old Colt Model 1902 Military semi-automatic pistol that has one very interesting feature plus comes with the original box & instructions! This pistol appears to be 100%
original in every way...however...the right side of the slide is completely blank!
Normally, the right side of every Colt Model 1902 is marked "AUTOMATIC COLT/CALIBRE 38 RIMLESS SMOKELESS" but this pistol lacks this marking. It does not appear that this slide was refinished and the marking removed...it appears to have been made this way and is an obvious factory error. The balance of the pistol is exactly as you would expect it to be and all markings are crisp and sharp. The great majority of the factory original blue finish remains however there are a few scattered handling marks, some scattered light freckling, plus a couple areas of fine pitting along the top/front of slide and below the muzzle on the frame (probably too long in a damp holster). The grip straps retain almost all of their finish. Strong case color remains on the spur hammer. Overall, I'd grade the finish at about 90-92%. The original hard rubber grips are excellent, free of cracks, chips, or significant wear. The mechanics are in perfect working order and the bore is excellent with bright, sharp rifling. The magazine is correctly unmarked and appears to be a factory original magazine in good condition however the finish is dull and somewhat spotty. This pistol comes with the rather rare factory original box which numbers to this gun. The box has a complete/correct end label and is good overall condition. There is normal wear, some old tape residue, and a few repairs but overall a very good box. Also included are the original instruction sheet and the smaller "Special Instructions" leaflet. The instruction sheet is correct and of the type used between 1909-1915. It shows some wear including one long tear running across the picture of the pistol on the front. The original owner, one "Thomas E. Evans", marked his name on the inside lid of the box and one the front and back of the instruction sheet.
The Colt 1902 Military Model was a slightly upgraded version of John Browning's Model 1900...America's first semi-automatic pistol. It is chambered for the .38 ACP cartridge (not .380 ACP and never .38 Super!). Production ran from 1902 until 1928 with approximately 18,000 pistols made. This interesting example was manufactured in 1915.
