COGSWELL & HARRISON ~ AVANT TOUT I
English 12-Ga Side-by-Side
26" Bbls, SK/MOD, EJECTORS...Mfd 1930, C&R
NO RESERVE!! Here's a nice Side-by-Side that was manufactured by the well-known English firm of Cogswell & Harrison Ltd, a company reportedly founded in 1770 and that is still in business! This is a variation of their renowned "Avant Tout" gun with it's patented "assisted opening" feature. A side-plated box-lock,
it wears 26-inch barrels that are rechambered for 2-3/4" shells (the barrel flats are marked 2-1/2"). The chokes measure approximately Skeet (Right, .005" constriction) and Modified (Left, .020" constriction). It has double triggers, automatic ejectors, and an automatic safety. The gun beautifully engraved in a fine floral scroll and each sideplate is marked "COGSWELL & HARRISON LTD". The barrel rib is marked "COGSWELL & HARRISON LTD, 168 PICCADILLY, LONDON". It has a splinter forend and straight English grip of nicely figured walnut. The stock has been lengthened by 1-3/8" with checkered butt and the Length of Pull measures 15" to the forward trigger. Drop @ Comb is 1-1/2"; Drop @ Heel is 2-3/8"; Stock has slight right-handed Cast Off. The gun weighs 6-pounds, 6-ounces. Overall condition is very good. The sides of the frame and the sideplates retain a good amount of case colored finish. The finish is worn on the lower tang and the trigger guard has gone plum colored. The barrels retain about 97-98% blue finish with only slight wear at the edges of the muzzles. There is no significant rust or pitting. The stocks are in good condition and free of any cracks. There are some normal handling marks but no large dents or any gouges. The mechanics appear to be in perfect working order with triggers, ejectors, safety, and assisted opening working properly. The gun locks up well and is not "off face". The bores are bright and free of any pitting, dents or problems. According to serial number records, this gun was manufactured in about 1930. A very high quality gun that should be a pleasure to own and shoot.
