Seller's Description
LSB#: 170630JL07

Make: Francisque Darne

Model: Sliding Breech

Serial Number: 21787

Year of Manufacture: Unknown; Since there is no established serial number date range for this shotgun, it is ATF classified Modern

Gauge: 16 Gauge 2.55" Chamber

Action Type: Side by Side, Sliding Breech Shotgun with Dual Non-Selective Triggers.

Markings: The underside of both barrels are marked with the blazon of the city of St. Etienne and “*ST. ETIENNE / 47.1”, the bottom of the left barrel is marked with the serial number. The underside barrel flat is marked “POUR POUDRES PYROXYLEES”, both sides are marked “65”, indicating a 2.55” chamber length. The top frame flat is marked with the serial number and crown over “PT” over sideways hourglass. The underside of the breech lever, underside of the breech block and top of the trigger guard are marked with the serial number. The trigger guard, breech assembly and barrel set have line engraving, please see our pictures.

Barrel Length: 27”

Choke: Left barrel: 0.640” (Improved Modified), Right barrel: 0.650” (Modified).

Sights / Optics: This shotgun is mounted with a bead front sight. The top of the rib has a wave-like pattern for glare reduction and is concave.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are French walnut. The stock consists of a one piece forend portion and butt stock (which features a strait wrist). The wood fits the metal well and retains its checker form. There are spots of discoloration from handling and age, along with some small chip losses. There are a few light scratches and marks to the belly of the stock. The sling swivel is missing and the hole remains open. There are scattered handling marks and areas of compression to some of the checkers, please see our pictures before bidding. The drop at comb is 1 ¾”, drop at heel is 2 3/4”. The LOP measures 14 3/8" and 13 ½” from the triggers to the back of the buttpad. The butt pad is an aftermarket modern decelerator. The contour of the stock leads us to believe the pad was fit to the gun instead of cutting the buttstock straight and then applying the pad. The stocks rate in about Fine -Excellent overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blued & Case Colored

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bores are bright, though the bores show some compression from dings on the outside of the barrel. There is light frosting in both barrels. The barrel wall thickness does not appear to be a concern.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 86% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows thinning on the barrels. The barrel set has some marks that translated to bumps on the inside of the bores, these damages are not deeply intrusive. The case coloring on the frame and breech assembly are still fairly bright and full. The trigger guard and trigger plate have spots of patina and thinned coloring. The screws are sharp The markings are crisp. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Fine - Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. This shotgun has a unique sliding breech which is unlocked by a “T” shaped lever; this design made Darne famous and was copied by many gunmakers. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: This gun sure was fun to get in the shop. A truly unique design that left us with a puzzle on how to take it down. Luckily someone here had some experience and it took quite a bit more force to free the barrel then anticipated. Not that it was a bad thing, the action is tight and the mechanics are smooth. The gun does not appear to have been used much judging by the overall condition. we think the previous owner might have been afraid of taking it down to clean it. There are no chips or cracks to the stock worth noting and the barrels are a little grey but acceptable. This gun is truly unique and was a pleasure to handle and learn about.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This shotgun can be transferred in California.
