SAVAGE ~ MODEL 1899
EXTREMELY RARE SPECIAL ORDER RIFLE
W/ FACTORY LETTER
NO RESERVE!! Here's what is almost certainly a One-Of-A-Kind Savage Model 1899 special order rifle that is chambered in .303 Savage. This rifle has some factory supplied special order features that are exceedingly rare. One such feature is a 26" tapered octagon barrel is factory fitted with a solid rib! The entire receiver is hand matted with a fine border running around all of the edges and corners (even the tang sight screw holes have borders!). The barrel rib, bolt top, and the crescent steel buttplate have the same bordered matting applied. It is fitted with a full pistol grip stock of fancy walnut with finely checkered fleur-de-lis panels. The bottom of the grip cap is carved with a large "S" surrounded by more matting. Highly unusual, the Savage company name or address do not anywhere on the rifle!!...aside from the caliber designation and the serial number, the rifle is unmarked! At first I was skeptical that such an unusual rifle could be original but when I received the letter from the Savage Arms historian my doubts were removed. The letter describes the barrel rib, full matte receiver, and fancy stocks. The historian finished the letter by stating "These are unusual options that make your 1899 extremely unique". According to the letter, this rifle was shipped to the Simmons Hardware Company on September 9, 1903. It is speculated that this may have been a purpose made hunting rifle for one of the Simmons family. The matte finished metal was certainly intended to make the rifle non-reflective. The barrel rib is exceedingly rare and was not normally available as an option.
Since the Simmons Hardware was one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the country, it would make sense that Savage would supply any special feature that a Simmons family member desired, including the "S" on the bottom of the pistol grip. The only other 1899 with a factory rib that I could find was made for John F. Dodge, co-founder of the Dodge Automobile Company. While far fancier than this rifle, the Dodge gun sold for $230,000.00!!
This rifle is in very good original condition. The matted surfaces of the receiver show some handling marks as well as some patina. The serial number is stamped through the matting on the bottom of the receiver. The lever shows a small amount of the original case colors but is mostly gone to a patina and shows a small amount of pitting. The barrel retains the majority of the original blue finish but does have some scattered light corrosion and a few spots where the finish has been thinned from attempts at cleaning rust. The front sight is a small ivory bead, the rear sight appears to be a Winchester sight. The stocks are in generally very good condition with normal handling wear. The forend does have a crack running rearward from the front/left along the barrel channel. The checkering is in good condition and the wood has never been sanded or refinished. The serial numbers are properly matching on receiver, forend, buttstock, and buttplate. The mechanics are in perfect working order and the bore rates very good, near excellent, with strong sharp rifling that has a good amount of shine and no deep pitting. This rifle "came out of the woodwork" and has not been in a collectors hands before reaching me. I have done nothing to the rifle since acquiring it. While not in "mint" condition, this is a really unusual rifle and would make a great piece for the 1899 collector. The aforementioned factory letter is included.
