REMINGTON ~ "U.S. MODEL 1916" MOSIN-NAGANT 1891
U.S. SURCHARGE, Matching, XLNT Bore...C&R
NO RESERVE!! Here's an interesting rifle that many U.S. military collectors are unaware of. This is a Remington made Mosin-Nagant M1891 bolt action rifle that was part of a large WWI Russian contract. Most of the production was delivered to Russia but when the Bolsheviks overthrew the Russian Imperial government, the balance of the contract went into default. The United States government wanted to keep the huge Remington factory in production so that the skilled workers would remain until production of the 1911 pistol could begin. In order to accomplish this, a contract to purchase most of the remaining Remington inventory was made. These rifles purchased by the U.S. government have come to be known as the "U.S. Model 1916" although the official U.S. military designation was simply "Russian Rifle". Standard U.S. small arms were still in short supply so many of these U.S. purchased M1891 rifles were issued to state militias, home guard units, and U.S. Army training units. Those rifles retained for U.S. military use were marked with a "U.S. surcharge", flaming bomb, and Eagle head proof on the stock ahead of the magazine.
This rifle is in very good overall condition. It is chambered for the 7.62x54R cartridge, is chamber dated 1917, and falls within the correct serial range for a U.S. marked rifle. The receiver, barrel and stock are all marked with the Tsarist Imperial Eagle. All serial numbered parts are properly matching, there are NO import markings, and the various parts carry the circle-R Remington manufacturer's marking. The original blue finish rates 75-80% with normal handling marks and some general thinning. There is some finish fading & loss to the trigger guard, magazine body, barrel bands, and buttplate. There is also a bit of fine pitting on the trigger guard and buttplate. The stock is in very good condition with scattered handling marks and small dings. There is a tiny chip behind the upper tang and a small crack at the front of the upper handguard. The wood appears to have been lightly cleaned in the past as the various markings are slightly "soft". The mechanics are in perfect working order and the bore is excellent with bright, sharp rifling. Muzzle erosion measures a low 1.3 on my .30 caliber gauge. It comes with the original cleaning rod. The winning bidder will also receive a copy of Charles Clawson's last book "AMERICAN-MADE MOSIN NAGANT RIFLES" that is signed by the author. Mr. Clawson is perhaps best remembered for his excellent works on the Colt 1911 pistols. This is a good example of an unusual military rifle with a fascinating history!
