JOHNSON AUTOMATICS ~ EARLY WWII M1941
OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL CONDITION...C&R
NO RESERVE!! Here's a rather scarce Johnson Automatics M1941 Semi-Automatic rifle. Chambered for the .30-06, the Johnson rifle was the main contender against the M1 Garand during the pre-WWII U.S. Military rifle trials. Although a limited number of Johnson rifles went on to serve with the U.S. Marines during WWII, the Garand was officially adopted instead, causing the Johnson to slowly fade into relative obscurity. It's interesting to note that there were many proponents at the time who stated the Johnson was clearly the better rifle. Extremely innovative, particularly for her time, the Johnson operates via a short recoil system whereby the barrel, bolt and carrier recoil backward together a short distance until barrel pressure drops and the barrel is stopped against a shoulder. The carrier/bolt continue back until the rotary bolt unlocks, ejects the empty case, and the feeding cycle begins. The "soup can" rotary magazine is also quite innovative and can be loaded with stripper clips or can be topped off with single cartridges during use, something that cannot be done with the M1 Garand. The barrel also disassembles from the rifle with the push of a recessed button making the Johnson more compact when needed (some were used by USMC "Marine Raider and Parachute Battalions" in the early Makin Island, Guadalcanal and Tulagi Island hopping campaigns in the Pacific). The receiver is a single casting with integral perforated heat shield. The right rear of the receiver is marked "Cranston Arms" and the adjustable rear sight is marked in "meters" which is correct for all Johnson rifles.
The top of the receiver carries the various patents and is marked "CAL. 30-'06 SEMI-AUTO. / "JOHNSON AUTOMATICS"
/ MODEL OF 1941 / MADE IN PROVIDENCE, R.I., U.S.A. / B4231". The front of the barrel bushing is marked "30-'06"
This rifle is in outstanding, completely original condition. The bayonet lug and front sight ears have not been modified. The original parkerized finish rates 98%
with only a few light handling marks. There is no rust of any pitting. The bolt is properly "in the white". The two-piece walnut stock is also in excellent condition and shows only a few light handling marks. There are no cracks,
chips, or repairs (note that the small laminated sections to the rear of the magazine are correct and original). The stocks have never been sanded or refinished. This rifle is in excellent mechanical condition and appears to function perfectly. The bore is also excellent with bright, sharp rifling and a low muzzle erosion reading of about 1.4.
This is truly an exceptional example of the Johnson 1941 and would be very difficult to upgrade. A great prize for the collector of WWII military firearms!
