LSB#: 170603AL29

Make: Colt

Model: 1849 Pocket

Serial Number: 218335

Year of Manufacture: 1862

Caliber: .31 Caliber Ball

Action Type: 5-Shot, Single Action Percussion Revolver

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “ADDRESS COL SAML(small “L”) COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA”. The underside of the barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder, and wedge are numbered to match. The cylinder scene is cleaer. The left side of the frame is marked “COLT’S PATENT”, the left of the trigger guard bow is marked "2". This is a matching gun.

Barrel Length: 4"

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a small brass bead, setinto the barrel. The rear sight is a “V” notch in the hammer.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are a one piece walnut stock with original varnish finish. There are no cracks or losses, about 50% of the original finish is retained and the fit is great. there are a lot of dings, marks, scratches, staines, etc. all consistent with the age, but better condition that normally seen. The stock rates in about Fine overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue, Case Colored & Silver Plated Brass

Finish Originality: All Original but for the cylinder.

Bore Condition: The bore is mid gray to bright. The rifling is actually sharp. There are some spots of mild pin prick erosion but this is a far better bore than is usually seen.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains almost 50% of its original finish. This finish is seen under scattered surface erosion and a mild drift to patina. A lot of finish is retained and it looks like the cylinder was only touched up, as the markings are still legible but there is bluing over a few dings. The remaining pistol is certainly orgiinal finish and attractive. The screw heads range from sharp to only lightly tooled. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action is tight for the age and functions as designed. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: From R.L. Wilson’s ‘The Book of Colt Firearms’, page 107 “This rather diminutive revolver, a smaller brother to the 36 caliber Model 1851 Navy, met with the largest sales unit volume in all of Colt’s percussion line. Indeed, no other percussion revolver made in America could match “The 1849” production record. Made from 1850 through 1873, the total manufactured was in excess of 325,000 in America, plus approximately 11,000 in London…Popular as a defense weapon, many thousands were sold in Western America to pioneer families. Soldiers appreciated the compact little pistols, and photographs of Civil War troops frequently show a sprinkling of the Model 1849 tucked into belts or in holsters. This 1849 was made in 1862, at the peak of the American Civil War. The cylinder was touched up, but it is otherwise far better than most. Please see our pictures and good luck.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This antique handgun can be sold in California.
