Seller's Description

Japanese O-Wakizashi Nihonto (Sword)

This auction is for a Japanese O-Wakizashi Nihonto (sword). The Wakizashi has a blade between 30 and 60 cm (12 and 24 in). A Wakizashi closer to the length of a Katana which are 60–73 cm (23 5/8–28 3/4 in.) is called O-Wakizashi and a Wakizashi closer to the length of a Tanto (dagger) is called Ko-wakizashi. The Wakizahi when worn together with the Katana was the official sign that the wearer was a Samurai or swordsman of feudal Japan. When a Samurai was dishonored he would commit Seppuku (usually using a Wakizahi) in order to regain his honor. Sometimes this is referred to as Hara-Kiri, although Seppuku is the correct term. Hara-Kiri and Seppuku are the same characters in Japanese, but there are two different ways to pronounce them (Hara-kiri ‘Belly-slitting’; a term for Seppuku, considered somewhat vulgar and rarely used by Samurai).

This O-Wakizashi sword has a slightly curved blade which is ~13 ¼” long. The blade is in excellent condition. It has a wooden grip (handle) and sheath. The grip is split/cracked but looks like it could be easily repaired. There are some minor dings in the wood and the gold band accents are mostly worn off (see photos). There are no markings as to the maker of this O-Wakizashi nor is there any information as to when it was made. We know it was brought back from Japan shortly after WWII by an Army Colonel who was the uncle of the current owner.

INFORMATION POSTED AT THE END

OF THE AUCTION. IT MAY SAVE TIME FOR BOTH OF US.

BEFORE YOU ASK WHAT THE RESERVE IS, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING…

RESERVE AUCTION

We do not disclose the Reserve on our “RESERVE AUCTIONS” because doing so defeats the purpose of the auction. Disclosing makes it a “Sale”, not an auction, much like a classified listing. Most of the firearms we offer at auction are on consignment with us from one of our clients. Our commitment to our clients is to obtain the highest fair market price possible for their firearms. Thus, we prefer the Reserve Auction and the “HAGGLE” feature offered by Auction Arms. About 50% of our sales are completed via the Haggle. In a Reserve auction if the high bidder does not reach the reserve by the end the auction the high bidder or the seller may institute what Auction Arms calls a Haggle a one-on-one exchange between buyer and seller to try and come to a mutual agreement on a price. If you are not familiar with the Haggle process, click on Auction Arms “Help & Info” for complete details. For those items that are not on consignment we usually offer a convenient “Buy-It-Now” price.

We are GOLDEN BEAR SERVICES, INC., a Federally Licensed Firearms Dealer in the Denver Metro area. We market exclusively on Auction Arms (since 02-23-1999) and our feedback exceeds 1600 positives. We list on our auctions a variety of offerings including firearms, ammunition, reloading tools & supplies and other accessories we pick up from clients who are interested in liquidating their firearms collections. We are also stocking dealers in a variety of “Mil Spec” manufacturers of quality AR15 & AR10 firearms and accessories including Uppers, Lowers, Parts Kits, barrels, stocks, mags, complete firearms and anything else we think you might be interested in.
