Seller's Description
LSB#: 170429DD08

Make: Marlin

Model: 1893 Takedown

Serial Number: 392327

Year of Manufacture: Circa 1909 (Last record was 355300 in 1906, with about 450000 by 1913. A few were made during WWI, and some after the war room left over parts: http://www.trapshooters.com/threads/marlin-s-ns-date-of-manufacture.214334/)

Caliber: .30-30 Winchester

Action Type: Lever Action Takedown Rifle With Full Length Tubular Magazine

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO., NEW HAVEN CT. U.S.A. / PAT’D OCT. 11. 1887. APRIL. 2. 1889.” and “.30-30” at the receiver. The top of the receiver is marked “Marlin Safety”. The front of the trigger plate is marked “392327”. The upper tang is marked “MODEL 1893”.

Barrel Length: The octagon barrel is 26” in length.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a German silver thin blade mounted in a slotted base which is dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is an elevator sight with a “V” notch that is also dovetailed into the barrel. The upper tang is drilled, tapped and filled for an aperture sight and the top of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for a receiver sight or scope mount.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are smooth walnut with a lacquer finish, a straight grip, blued steel crescent buttplate and steel nosecap. The wood shows oil staining around the metal parts. The wood to metal fit is Excellent. There are several dings and bruises in the wood, most of which are dark with oil staining. There is also a small ding/gouge in the right side of the belly. The LOP measures 13 1/4” as measured from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate shows surface loss and light wear at the heel and toe, with thinning and light handling marks in the remainder. The buttplate is in about Fine condition. The stocks rate in about Fine overall condition.

Type of Finish: The barrel, magazine tube and loading gate are blued and the receiver, hammer and lever are case colored.

Finish Originality: Factory Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright tending to gray at the muzzle. The rifling shows very light wear. There are some very light marks at the muzzle that could be from a rod, or erosion – they are so light we can’t tell, even with a magnifying glass. Our bore gauge will just barely enter the muzzle, which would indicate a ME of -2.5. There are no nicks at the muzzle to indicate why it might be that tight. A .30-30 cartridge will chamber correctly.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its metal finish. There is a spot of erosion with surface loss on the right side of the magazine tube a few inches in front of the forend and a few tiny spots of pinprick surface erosion in the left side of the magazine tube 5-6” from the muzzle and the top and left shoulder of the barrel about 9” from the muzzle. There is thinning on the edges of the barrel, the magazine tube end cap, the forend nosecap, the loading gate and the edges of the front and rear sight bases with a spot of thinning on the underside of the magazine tube. There are a few light handling marks in the barrel, magazine tube and the lever, with multiple tool marks at the front of the trigger plate and the underside of the barrel extension. The hammer and magazine tube endcap knurling show light wear. The screw heads are sharp except for the small screw on the right side of the receiver, which is distressed. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly although we have not test fired this rifle. The hammer has a half-cock safety position and the lever/bolt lock up solidly, as does the barrel to the receiver. As with all firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: Marlin’s Model 1893 rifle was actually the precursor to the Model 36 and eventually the Marlin Model 336. Few guns have ever been produced and used as widely as the 336 and this is where it all started. This rifle was made in about 1909, and is a rare takedown model with a 26” octagon barrel chambered in .30-30 Win. It is in about Fine condition with 85% of its original finish remaining. The bore is bright, tending to gray at the muzzle. The rifling shows very light wear. Our bore gauge will barely enter the muzzle, and we did not see any nicks or anything else near the muzzle in the bore that would cause the bore to be so tight. The case coloring on this rifle is still brilliant, its edges are sharp and the wood is also in about Fine condition: please see out pictures!! This is a beautiful rifle for its age and deserves a spot in any collection of Marlin or lever action rifles.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This C&R eligible rifle can be transferred in California.
