This auction is for an authentic Japanese Army Officers SHIN-GUNTO KATANA by swordsmith Sako Nobumitsu. It was likely made in late WWII (1944). It is in excellent condition. The overall length is 39 ½”. There are some chips and scrapes in the dark brown painted surface of the Saya (scabbard). It is 29 ½” long. The Fuchi (scabbard band) and the Kojiri (end cap) are painted metal with a floral design, all in excellent condition. The latch that latches the Katana (sword) to the Saya (scabbard) is in excellent condition and the latch button also has a floral pattern.
The pommel Kashira (end cap) is painted metal construction with a floral design. This is the most common pattern found during WW2. The Tuska (wooden handle) is wrapped with a dark brown Ito (cloth binding) over Sa-Me (sting ray skin). There are gold Menuki (flower ornements) under the Ito. The Tuska is attached to the Kuri Jiri style tang by a Mekugi (wooden peg). The Fuchi (metal collar w/floral design connects to the Seppa (metal spacer) to the Tusba (metal gold plated crossguard floral design). All in excellent condition.
The Hamon (blade) is Hako style with an Ikubi style tip and is 27” long. It has a brass Habaki where the Hamon (blade) fits through the Tusba (crossguard). All in excellent condition with the exception of a small crack in the underside of the Habaki. The Hamon (blade) is in excellent condition, no nicks, no tarnish, sharp with a beautiful polished surface.
This Katana was brought back from Japan after WWII by the owner’s uncle who was a US Army Colonel. Will make a nice addition to someone’s collection.
We do not disclose the Reserve on our “RESERVE AUCTIONS” because doing so defeats the purpose of the auction. Disclosing makes it a “Sale”, not an auction, much like a classified listing. Most of the firearms we offer at auction are on consignment with us from one of our clients. Our commitment to our clients is to obtain the highest fair market price possible for their firearms. Thus, we prefer the Reserve Auction and the “HAGGLE” feature offered by Auction Arms. About 50% of our sales are completed via the Haggle. In a Reserve auction if the high bidder does not reach the reserve by the end the auction the high bidder or the seller may institute what Auction Arms calls a Haggle a one-on-one exchange between buyer and seller to try and come to a mutual agreement on a price. If you are not familiar with the Haggle process, click on Auction Arms “Help & Info” for complete details. For those items that are not on consignment we usually offer a convenient “Buy-It-Now” price.
