Seller's Description

Special Order Presentation .22 Ballard Target Rifle "Doc Pfenning- Wild West Rodeo Hall of Fame Innnovator"

Offered here for sale

is a spectacular 19th Century vintage custom ordered target rifle by Marlin. This specimen, serial number 5724, is chambered for .22LR caliber and

has a half round-half octagon 28" barrel. The rifle

retains all of its blued finish on barrel and the large majority of its case colors on receiver although lightening/thinning with some turned to a silvery gray patina. It has a very fine rear target tang sight and hooded front sight. It is fitted with a palm rest and

walnut piece on lever. The gun is ornately embellished from its shotgun style

buttplate extending on underside of butt and forearm

and engraved on exterior mountings and silver mounted. Inset into the buttstock is a later presentation plate which reads "To Barbara O. Pfenning from Dr. H. Pfenning-1932".

Very interesting. Our research shows that H.E. "Doc" Pfenning helped to conceive, organize, and produce the first Ellensburg, Washington rodeo and Wild West show in 1923. He was an integral member of the 1920s Ellensburg ranching and cowboy community. Pfenning visited the roundups and “Sunday rodeos” held in the Kittitas Valley, and he dreamed of one day staging a large-scale “Wild West Show” in the town of Ellensburg. Combined with Pfenning’s wide exposure to cattle roundups and rodeos and Wild West Shows, his work took form in his program for the 1923 Ellensburg Rodeo. The September 13-15, 1923, Ellensburg Rodeo featured 18 major events advertised as the “greatest Wildwest Roundup in the State.” His daughter , Barbara O. Pfenning was an excellent horsewoman and served as the 1938 Ellensburg Rodeo Queen. The finely figured walnut stock is in excellent condition while the rifle itself is in the same condition overall. The aluminum neck of the palm rest had been cracked and was repaired.
