Smith & Wesson
28 ‘The Highway Patrolman’
Year of Manufacture:
1955 (The History of Smith & Wesson by Roy Jinks details the first Highway Patrolman made in January 1954, serial number S107500, there were 8,427 made in the first year, putting the serial number range within the year of 1955, which is the second year of production.)
.357 Magnum & .38 Special
6-Shot, Double / Single Action, Swing-Out Fluted Cylinder Hand Ejector Revolver
The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”, the right is marked “.357 / CTG. / HIGHWAY / PATROLMAN”, the right side plate is marked with the S&W monogram, the right side of the frame has the four line Marcas Registradas. The left side of the grip frame is marked “H”, the butt is marked with the serial number (also found on the ejector rod cutout, rear of the cylinder, underside of the ejector rod and rear flat of the yoke); the right side of the grip frame is marked “D / H / I”. The yoke is marked “34609”, the cut is marked “34609” and a hash tag. The inside of the right grip panel is marked “120 / 923”, the stocks have nickel plated S&W logo medallions.
6”, Pinned, with shrouded ejector rod and solid barrel rib.
Sights / Optics:
The front sight is a serrated ramp blade that is integral to a serrated ramp base, which is pinned to the solid un-serrated rib of the barrel. The rear sight is a flat top, square notched leaf in a base that is micrometer-click adjustable for windage and elevation. The top of the revolver has a matte black finish for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration & Condition:
The pistol has checkered walnut Magna stocks with diamond shapes around the screw escutcheons; the right stock is serialized to the pistol. The wood has sharp fit to the metal, the checkers have a few compression marks, the butt and forward flanks have mild bruises and rubbing. The right grip's checker bordering has a long but narrow chip loss with a few other splinter losses, though they are small enough to avoid direct notice. The grips rate in about Fine and Excellent overall condition.
Type of Finish:
Blued, with case colored serrated trigger and checkered hammer.
The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
This handgun retains about 85+% of its metal finish. The cylinder has a few scrapes and a defined drag line. The leading edges have holster wear, the grip straps have faint patina but in all, this revolver is free of major damages. The metal to metal fit is flush in all areas and the case coloring still has nice tone. The screw head slots are strait. The markings are crisp. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine Plus to Excellent condition.
The action functions correctly. The cylinder produces tight lockup in all chambers, the tolerances are razor sharp, please see our pictures. The barrel is pinned and the cylinder has counter-bored chambers. The double action trigger pull is smooth, the single action is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories:
Included is a brown right handed leather holster made by Brauer Bros of St. Louis, marked as the model H38. The leather has darkened stains on the belt loop, the brass buttons bled verdigris onto the surfaces, with a good cleaning it will look great. The leather is strong and without major damages outside of surface scrapes and surface wrinkling on the strap. The holster is in about Very Good overall condition.
The first year of production for the Smith & Wesson Model 28 Highway Patrolman rendered 8,427 units; this is a second year of production Highway Patrolman that has survived quite well and is all parts matching. The metal fitting is near perfect, the factory put in a good deal of time making sure everything turned out sharp. The vintage Brauer Brothers holster was probably made around the same time. Some prefer the matte blue finish, it reduces glare and can take a beating unlike high polished blue Model 26 or 29's. The cylinder lockup is very tight, with a 6" barrel and adjustable sights, you can hunt medium game with five other rounds 'just in case'.
