Sights / Optics: The front sight is a rounded blade, pinned fore to aft into the barrel rib. The rear sight is a “U” notched portion of the frame that rises above the front of the barrel latch.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are a two piece black hard rubber set, with intertwined S&W monograms encircled on the upper portions, surrounded by smooth bordering, which contains the checkers and diamond shape around the screw escutcheon. The butt of the right panel has a chip loss, the other surfaces have scuff, compression and scrape marks. The grips rate in about Fair to Good overall condition for their age.

Bore Condition: The bore is gray and the rifling is defined, but interrupted by spots of light to moderate depth pin prick erosion and spots of built surface erosion, found infrequently in the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 50% of its metal finish. There is dark heavy pitting on the surfaces along with general handling marks. Please see our pictures. The screw head slots have moderate tooling. The left side plate's screw is missing. Overall, this handgun rates in about Poor condition given its mechanics.
Mechanics: The hammer does not advance the cylinder. The left side plate does not sit flush with the frame; we believe components within the frame are out of order. A skilled gunsmith may be able to make this pistol function again though we do not recommend firing it. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: This is a Smith & Wesson 2nd Model in .38 S&W, which has about 50% of its original nickel finish remaining. It looks to have been someone's favorite carry piece back in the late 1880's. As it sits, there could be no better display of the American Wild West, it must have seen some interesting times. Some TLC and a mechanical investigation could return it to working condition but it would be neat on display in the office. Please see our pictures and good luck.
CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This antique handgun can be sold in California.
