Action Type: 5-Shot Double / Single Action Percussion Revolver
Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858. MARCH 17, 1863 / REMINGTON & SONS ILION, NEWYORK, U.S.A. / NEW MODEL”. The underside of the barrel, trigger guard hook and left of the grip frame are marked "117".
Barrel Length: 4 1/2”
Sights / Optics: The front sight is missing. The rear sight is a V groove on top of the frame.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth hardwood with a walnut stain. The stocks have a generally nice fit to the grip frame, there are scuffs and scrapes on both, the right has a chip loss around the escutcheon, which is not secured in the stock. The grips rate in about Good Plus overall condition as not original to the pistol.
Type of Finish: We believe the revolver was nickel plated with a silver colored brass trigger guard.
Finish Originality: The surfaces have been ground down for the most part, the remaining finish is original.
Bore Condition: The bore is dark, the rifling is shallow, there are spots of moderate erosion and pitting in the bore.
Overall Condition: The surfaces have heavy grinding marks, remaining nickel is seen around the markings, which helped preserve most of them, though the bottom line of the barrel address is nearly gone. The surfaces have heavy tool marks, scrapes and mild pitting. The underside of the barrel is missing the loading rod tip, the current loading rod lever is too long for the barrel's missing catch location, it is a later replacement. The trigger guard has natural tarnish and a small amount of silver plating left. The markings are clear unless otherwise noted. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fair condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder produces moderate side to side play in each chamber. Given its age, we do not recommend firing this pistol. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: According to Flayderman's Guide to Antique Firearms, The New Model Police was produced from 1865-1873, with about 18,000 in total. This is an earlier New Model Police in .36 ball, showing some of its original nickel and silver plating. These were handy little wheel guns that served multiple roles, including defense and putting up Wanted posters with a couple tacks. This one would have seen early post-Civil War America, which was vastly transforming and uncertainty was a daily meal. The serialized parts match, the pistol has definitely seen some action and we can only imagine where this revolver may have been during its life, it should be a welcomed addition to any collection.
CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This antique handgun can be sold in California.
