Norfolk Contract M1861 Springfield 1863 Civil War Rifled Musket. This is an good example of a Civil War Springfield Contract model 1861 Rifled Musket that was manufactured by Welch, Brown & Co., Norfolk, Ct. in 1863 . This model musket is the basic single shot .58 cal. rifled muzzleloader, iron buttplate, contoured hammer, three barrel bands, ramrod, iron nose cap. Lock is marked "1863" behind the hammer, with the Eagle to the right side of the lock along with the “US NORFOLK” marking. Barrel marked "VP" at breech. Rear sight w/2 leafs graduated for 300 and 500 yards while the buttplate is marked "US". Three bands each marked. This one shows it's age, but still works great. Clearly marked on wood and metal. The 40 inch barrel still has clear rifling. Metal mostly smooth and browning. The factory wood show some heavier dings and scratches, but no cracks. L.O.P. about 13.5 inches. Action works great.
