Description

Seller's Description:
Presented for sale is a DWM 1906 Navy Luger, second issue. While second issue Navy Lugers in and of themselves are not plentiful, the provenance associated with this particular Navy Luger places it in a unique category as a collectible firearm. On Good Friday before Easter 1916, Sir Roger Casement and several other leaders of the planned rebellion against British rule in Ireland rowed ashore at Tralee Bay in a small boat from the German submarine U-19. A German ship carrying rifles, machine guns and ammunition was on course to be intercepted by a British warship, but based on some accounts it is thought that in the small boat with Casement were a number of weapons drawn from German Navy stores, to include a small number of Navy Lugers. The commanders, including Sir Roger Casement, were eventually captured and executed, with Casement being hanged during August 1916 in London. It is known that at some point Navy Lugers were delivered to Irish rebels, being used in the Easter rebellion and the bloody civil war that followed. The Lugers remained in official Irish hands after 1923, and were first discovered by the original purchaser in the depot in 1948, but were not for sale. It took until 1990 for the original purchaser to obtain the pistols, which numbered only 28 (27 Navy Lugers and one cut down Artillery), and receive permission to import them into this country. This pistol is one of that lot, an assertion supported by documents from the original purchaser and the Republic of Ireland Department of Defence verifying their existence in inventory and subsequent sale. The condition of this pistol is not pristine, but appropriate considering the history associated with it. All numbered parts match except the side plate, takedown lever, and magazine, which is not surprising given that these pistols were probably disassembled and cleaned in secret and as a group, with the mixing of some external parts common. The amount of original bluing remaining is substantial, with high edge wear in the normal areas. While no overt rust or pitting is present, there is some light freckling in several areas, which can be seen in several of the pictures. The appropriate proofs on the receiver, barrel and toggle are present. The left grip is chipped in the typical location below the safety lever, with the grips in overall very good condition. The bore is reasonable, with some frosting and minor pitting, again, not unexpected considering the circumstances of its use. There is an import mark which has been diamond engraved on the underside of the rail of the receiver, and which also documents the history of the pistol. For those interested in this pistol, I will be happy to answer additional questions and provide more detailed pictures if necessary. Payment must be made by certified funds which must be verified before transfer is made. I will transfer the pistol only to another FFL, either 01 or 03. Thanks for your interest, and the best of luck.
