Description

Seller's Description:
Not sure of the model. Looks like an 1875, but the writing on the side reads: Brown Mfg Co., Newberryport. Mass Ballard's Patent Nov 5 1881. Very nice condition and fully functional. Still has good rifling. Serial Number 20950. I have been told that this may have been made under military contract. Some of these were rimfire, but this one is a centerfire model. A 45-70 fits in the chamver, nicely, but a little long. --------------------------------------NOTE: SOMEONE HOLLOWED OUT THE PART OF THE HAMMER THAT MAKES CONTACT WITH THE FIRING PIN, SO IT WILL NOT FIRE UNTIL THAT HAS BEEN FILLED BACK IN. I AM SURE ANY GUNSMITH COULD DO THAT FOR NOT TOO MUCH MONEY.--------- If you have more info on this model, please enlighten me!!

  Questions from GunAuction.com Users...
(Public)
Q:  It appears this is one of the military rifles made with the forearm shortened. You can tell if "No.46" is on the barrel at the rear sight. It is a .46 caliber, and utilized the "dual ignition" system of Merrimack Arms, Brown's predecessor. It is a rimfire, but had a percussion cap so it could be shot as a muzzel loader if cartridges ran out. Marlin was the first to make Ballards in centerfire, after Brown stopped making them. My question is, what are those plates attached to each side of the receiver, and if you can tell, how are they attached? 03/20/2010
A:  The plates are not attached they are actually part of the receiver. As far as it being a rimfire, maybe you can explain how that would work since the firing pin is in the center. I place a 45-70 cartridge(blank) in the barrel and it struck dead center and fired. 03/20/2010
