Description

Seller's Description:

This is an all original Civil War issued Smith carbine. The Smith is a .50 caliber, percussion, single-shot, breechloading weapon that used a rubber cartridge which contained the bullet and powder. A far less reliable cartridge made from paper and foil known as "Poultney's Patent" was also used. The Smith's breech could also be loaded with loose powder and a bullet and this type of loading was used by Confederates cavalry units. Modern components for making ammunition are available from a number of sources. This carbine opens by depressing the latch ahead of the trigger to release the barrel which then pivots downward on the frame. The barrel length is 21-5/8". The Smith carbine was used mainly by cavalry units during the Civil War with 30,062 carbines issued between late 1861 and 1865. The serial number on this Smith is in the 18,1xx range. Among some of the units that were issued the Smith carbines were the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry, 1st Connecticut Cavalry, 2nd West Virginia Cavalry, 7th and 11th Illinois Cavalry, 7th and 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry, and the 6th and 9th Ohio Cavalry. Cavalry units of the Confederate Army of Tennessee also carried captured Smiths. These carbines were also used by Irish Union veterans in the post-war Fenian raids into Canada.

The left side of the receiver is marked in 3 seperate lines above the sling bar: ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE U.S.A., and in 2 lines below it: SMITHS PATENT / JUNE 23, 1857.

The L.H. side of the receiver is marked in 3 lines above and forward of the trigger guard: MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO / CHICOPEE FALLS.

The rear tang is marked Starr's Patent./Sept. 14th, 1858.

The left side of the barrel's chamber area is stamped with 2 letters" "P" and "N".

The left side of the stock has 2 sharp cartouches with the inspectors letters of "AJN" and "JM"

The trigger guard is marked with the letter "N" near the rear guard screw

The buttplate has the letter "M" stamped near the top buttplate screw

This Smith carbine is all original in fully functioning, working condition and is shootable with the proper load. The lock is crisp and the barrel to receiver lockup is tight with absolutely no play. The bore's rifling is strong and bright and in excellent condition with absolutely no pitting. The exterior of the barrel retains 100% of its original blue finish with no pitting. There is a small minor scratch on the L.H. side near the front sight. The barrel band has turned a smooth patina. The buttplate is a mixture of original blue and smooth patina as is the trigger guard. The receiver and hammer retains nearly all of its original case hardening color The wood has no cracks or missing pieces. The wood overall is nice and its evident that this carbine has not been abused. The buttstock and forend exhibits just a few small dings that would be consistent with normal useage on an issued Civil War weapon. All screw heads are in great condition and are NOT "buggered up." The saddle ring is present. This is a very nice original and shootable issued Civil War carbine for the collector or the reenactor.
