Description

Seller's Description:
DESCRIPTION:

This is a Springfield M1 Garand National Match rifle, we believe this to be an ALL ORIGINAL M1 Grand National Match rifle, however we do not have any paperwork for this rifle. The National Match M1 Garand is chambered in .30-06 Sprg. In 1953 the Ordnance Department directed Springfield Armory to furnish 800 M1 Garand rifles for use at the National Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio. Total production of new and rebuilt National Match M1 rifles is somewhere around 44,000, however due to multiple rebuilds the actual production number is probably much lower. Compared to the standard service grade M1 Garand, the National Match M1 Garand is capable of a higher degree of accuracy.

This National Match M1 Garand we have here is a Type 2 with glass-bedding of the receiver and trigger housing. As with all National Match rifles the receiver was manufactured by the Springfield Armory. Type 1 rifles rebuilt to Type 2 are in the 5 and 6 million serial number ranges. This M1 Garand National Match is serial numbered #5483761, based on delivery records the receiver is from a Type 1 which was manufactured in 1954. The barrel is manufactured by the Springfield Armory and is stamped "NM" on the left-side behind the front sight (see photos). The right-side of the barrel at the breech-end is stamped "T SA 7791035 2 63 Y11 P PM" with a three-star over eagle stamp (DOD acceptance stamp) next to that (see photos). Based on these stampings the barrel is from 1963. The top of the bolt is stamped "6528287-SA" with "A11" below. There is also a "peen" mark just above the numbers stamped on the bolt.

The rifle has all the Type 2 National Match components including; a National Match front sight which is stamped "NM 062", gas cylinder which is stamped "NM" on the bottom behind the front stacking swivel, an operating rod which is stamped "NM" on top, and a 1/2 minute windage and elevation adjustment, hooded aperture rear sight that is stamped "NM / 2A" on the right-side. As mentioned the receiver and trigger housing is glass bedded. Also, the inside of the floorplate has "6131" painted in white letters (see photos).

The stock has a circle "P" stamped in the front-bottom of the grip and a three-star over eagle cartouch (DOD acceptance stamp) in the left-side, just below the receiver (see photos). The stock is a similar to the standard M1 Garand stock with a handguard and steel trap-door buttplate. There is an olive drab 1-1/4" military-style sling mounted on the rifle.

CONDITION:

The metal and wood on this rifle have what appears to be their original finish which is in very good condition. All the metal is Parkerized and still has 90% or better of its finish. There are a few scratches in the metal on the barrel and gas tube. There are also a few minor scratches in both sides of the receiver and the operating lever. The front left-side of the receiver has some very minor spots of pitting, otherwise the metal is in excellent condition (see photos). The bore is shiny with crisp rifling and in excellent condition with less than .001" muzzle erosion and .002" throat erosion. The action is smooth and closes tight. The trigger has a 5 lb. pull with no creep.

The Walnut stock has it's original finish and is in good condition with some minor scratches and divots here and there, but overall for the age of the gun the stock is in nice shape. The right-side of the stock has been slightly "carved out" above the trigger, at the corner where the bottom meets the side (see photos). It appears that someone may have done this to get a better fit for their trigger finger. Also what appears to be a "red tack" has been pushed into the top of the stock behind the receiver, possibly to be used as a thumb locator (see photos). There are no cracks in the stock or handguard and the sling is in excellent condition.

Most folks believe that the Type 2 M1 Garand National Match is the peak of development for the Garand rifle. This one we have here is in excellent mechanical condition and very good to excellent in appearance. Serial #5483761. STK. #10648.

If you're a Garand collector, you won't want to miss out on this Type 2 M1 Garand National Match rifle. We don't see many standard M1 rifles is this great of shape come through our doors very often, let alone a real deal M1 Garand National Match that's in this excellent of condition. Don't miss out on this one!

  Questions from GunAuction.com Users...
(Public)
Q:  What is the "red tack" about? jim 07/06/2007
A:  We believe that person that was shooting the rifle used it as a locating point for his thumb, so he would have the same hold on the rifle every time. The same idea as a kisser button on a bow. Thanks for looking at our auctions. Herb 07/07/2007
