Description

Seller's Description:
This is a J.P. Sauer and Sohn, Three Barrel German Drilling. This Drilling has two, 16 Gauge barrels (2-1/2" chambers) over an 8x57 J.R. rifled barrel. We're not really sure of the Model of this J. P. Sauer Drilling, but it's configuration is very similar to a Model 3000. We also do not know what year this particular gun was made.

The barrels are 23-1/2" Krupp-Laufstahl Steel barrels. The right shot barrel has the original mount for mounting a scope. Unfortunately we do not have the scope or mounts. Both 16 Gauge shot barrels have excellent bore's. The right bore is choked .645" and the left bore is choked .638" both with 2-1/2" chambers. The rifle barrel also has an excellent bore with crisp rifling, no pitting and is chambered in 8x57 J.R. The barrels still have their original blue which is 75% or better. The blue is thin on the sides of each shotgun barrel and there is a small ding on top of the left shotgun barrel about 6" rear of the muzzle. The ding does not go through the barrel all the way and can not be seen in the bore.

The receiver is a box lock which is case colored and scroll engraved. The action is tight and the tang lever is still slightly to the right. There is still some decent case color left on top of the receiver next to the cocking indicators, side of the receiver and a bit on the bottom near the trigger guard. Case is about 50%-60% (see photos). The scroll engraving is excellent with sharp corners and edges. The action uses a Greener Crossbolt and Greener Side Safety for all three barrels. There are double lugs, cocking indicators and a push-button barrel selector lever located on the tang. When the selector lever is moved to the forward position, a rear folding sight on the top of the barrel rib flips-up (see photos) and actuates the front trigger to be used for the rifle barrel. Moving the selector lever to the rear folds the rear sight down and switches the front trigger back to the shotgun barrel.

The forearm and buttstock are checkered Walnut. The buttstock is a pistol grip stock with a cheek piece. The recoil pad is not original. As far as we can tell it does not appear that the buttstock has been cut-down. L.O.P. from the rear of the stock (not recoil pad) to the front trigger and rear trigger is 13-3/4" & 12-3/4" respectively. The gun has it's original 3/4" front and rear swivels.

The wood appears to have it's original finish. Most of the shine in the finish is worn from the forearm and pistol grip on the buttstock, but there is still some shine left on the sides of the buttstock. There is one very small chip in the right-side of the forearm at the rear-corner, in front of the receiver, but there are no cracks in the forearm. There are a few dings and scratches in the forearm with the most noticeable being about a 1/2" long on the right-side below the chip (see photos). There are also some divots and scratches in both sides of the buttstock. Some of the scratches and divots on the buttstock are below the surface. There is a chip in the checkering on the left-side of the pistol grip and another chip in the front-bottom of the grip (see photos).

The gun comes with one box of Norma 8x57 J.R. 196 grain soft-point round-nose cartridges. There is one cartridge missing from the box for a total of 19 which are all unfired. There are also two boxes of 10 each, RWS 8x57 J.R. cartridges of which six are unfired out of the 20 cartridges. Overall this Drilling is in excellent condition mechanically and good to very good condition in appearance. Serial #284615. STK. #10081.

If you're a collector of these fine German Drillings you won't want to miss this one we have here! The sheer quality of these guns and the extraordinary amount of work involved in the manufacture of these guns shows in the beautiful scroll work, detail to the stocks and absolute precision of all the mechanical workings.
