Description

Seller's Description:
This is a Model 1812 or 1816 Springfield Musket sold as is. I am not sure of the model number but 2 viewers of the auction tell me it is model 1812. Has been in my family for many years. Used to hang on wall in my Grandfathers house. He always said it belonged to one of his uncles who used it in the War with Mexico. Has been in my closet for last 2 years. Pictures are not the best but show its age and condition. Stock is sound. No visible cracks and is one piece walnut.Have never tried to clean up metal, which has pitting on lock and barrel and rings. However it is in sound condition. Does not fire. Hammer will not cock, interior spring must be broken, I have never tried to find out. Ramrod is button type and front sight is brass. Bayonet lug on top of barrel. No bayonet. 1816 is at rear of lock plate and you can make out part of the word SPRINGFIELD below pan on lock. Must look close, hard to see in pictures. From what I am told this is all original and was probably made around 1816 -1817. This info came from a buddy at work who shoots muzzle loaders, however he is not an expert in the firearms business and I am not an expert. No way to tell if my Grandfathers story is correct to verify dating. It is an antique no question on that and it is a Springfield.

  Questions from GunAuction.com Users...
(Public)
Q:  This looks more like a Model 1812 with the scooped out stock cheekpiece, and style of lock and hammer. 02/16/2007
A:  YOU MAY BE RIGHT. I AM NOT AN EXPERT. MY INFO CAME FROM A PERSON I WORK WITH WHO SEEMED TO KNOW FIREARMS SINCE HE SHOOTS BLACK POWDER MUZZLE LOADERS. HOWEVER HE IS NOT IN THE FIREARMS BUSINESS AND MAY NOT KNOW MODEL VARIATION. THE NUMBER AT THE BACK OF THE PLATE IS HARD TO READ AND THE "6" IN 1816 COULD BE A "2". IT I HARD TO SAY. EITHER WAY IT IS DEFINITELY AN ANTIQUE SPRINGFIELD MUSKET. 02/16/2007
