Description

Seller's Description:
Here's an interesting and rather rare pistol for the collector of Colt automatics. Colt Government Model .45 s/n C220984. This is an early post-WWII pistol that was shipped in November 1946. Colt Factory letter included. Immediately following WWII, Colt had some military parts left from the WWII M1911A1 govt. contracts. Colt utilized those parts in their first post-war commercial pistols. This is one of these hard to find guns. Notice the double rollmarks. On the left side of the slide is the standard military rollmark as seen on the M1911 A1. On the right side is the post-war commercial rollmark. On top of the slide and in front of the rear sight is the P proof, present on all Colt military M1911A1 pistols beginning in 1937. The slide, frame, checkered hammer, serrated lanyard loop mainspring housing, serrated slide stop, highly polished and checkered stamped trigger, checkered thumb safety, P proofed Colt 45 Auto F marked barrel and wide ring plastic stocks are all late WWII military Colt parts. The remainder of the small parts may also be surplus military, but there is no way to verify. According to Clawson, this variation was made between serial numbers C220001 to about C222000...between October 1946 & January 1947. Not all pistols in this early 2000 pistol serial range appear to have all military small parts. A similar pistol recently sold on Auction Arms auction 7641676. That pistol was a slightly higher serial number and did not have the late WWII military trigger as this pistol does. These early 1946 pistols evolved slightly, most notably with the elimination of some hand polished areas, the addition of the Government Model marking and finally the transition from surplus military to commercial manufactured parts. This pistol has all military parts and is highly polished, with the non-glare matte finish on top of the slide... exactly the same variation as Charles Clawson’s pistol, C220878 (only 106 numbers earlier than this pistol) pictured on p.83 of his book. "Exterior surfaces were highly polished with special finishing wheels, then chemically blued with a non-glare matte finish on top of the slide"...p.77 of Clawson's book. My photos do not reflect how highly polished the pistol is because I took the photos in a setting to help reduce the glare and clearly show the markings. The last photo does more accurately show how highly polished the pistol is. For detailed information, please see pp. 77-83 and p.208 of Colt .45 Government Models 1912-1970 2nd edition by Charles W. Clawson, or contact me. I’ll try to answer any questions you may have. More photos available for interested bidders. This pistol is all original Colt factory finish and in excellent condition. The percentage of original finish far exceeds that required for an “NRA Excellent” rating. The pistol shows light use, with some holster wear and minor handling. It displays beautifully both left and right sides. Excellent bright bore with no pitting or frosting. Excellent mechanics. Rare and desirable among Colt collectors. Difficult to find or upgrade. Please contact me for more information about these rare early post-WWII Colts, or to answer any questions regarding condition of the pistol or terms of the auction. Please ask all questions prior to bidding, early enough to insure a timely reply. Buyer to pay by USPS postal money orders only. Buyer adds $25.00 to final price for shipping. See payment and shipping requirements below. AK and HI shipping may be more. Valid C&R or FFL required.
