Description

Seller's Description:
I have here for bid a Remington 788 bolt action in .44 Remington Magnum caliber. This gun is a sort of good news, bad news deal. The good is that has the original sights , clip, etc., and has only been fired 12 times. Nice bright bore and if you note in the pics, the bolt face has it's original bluing. The bad news is that the gun's previous owner didn't take the best of care of it. Looks like he left it stood up in the corner of the barn without protection from the elements as it has some evidence of surface rust. Top of the receiver is lightly freckled and there were a couple of pitted spots on the barrel as noted in the pics. Stock has some scrapes, mostly on the one side. Overall the gun presents itself fairly well and mechanically it is like new. Although the stock nicks and the pitted ares detract from it as a show piece, as a field gun it should perform admirably.

  Questions from GunAuction.com Users...
(Public)
Q:  Does the magazine work? Does the rifle feed, extract, and eject properly? From the picture it looks like the ejector is either inserted incorrectly or bent. Please let me know. 10/23/2006
A:  The only .44 mag ammo I have on hand is what the previous owner bought when he got the gun. Remington 240 grain flat nose soft point. Upon trying them I see why he didn't shoot the gun but only 12 times. The blunt flat nose seems to catch the loading ramp and fail to feed. I tried some 44 special round nose loads and they fed fine. Loaded cases don't reliably eject, but there doesn't seem to be any problem kicking out empties. Like I have said before, mechanically the gun should be like it just came off the shelf due to the low # of rounds thru it. Maybe this functioning problem is why they only built the .44 Magnum 788 for such a short time? Thanks for looking, Steve 10/23/2006
