COLT ~ 1911 .22-45 CONVERSION
UNIT Pre-War #U 642...EXTREMELY RARE FACTORY CASE!

NO RESERVE!! Here's a wonderful item for the dedicated Colt collector! This is a hard to find Pre-War .22-45 Service Model Ace Conversion Unit. With this unit, the owner of a 1911/Government Model .45 could shoot .22 Long Rifle ammunition in his pistol. Equipped with the "floating chamber", these did a good job of simulating the recoil of centerfire cartridges while at the same time greatly enhancing reliability. The Pre-War conversion units are easily identified as they were serial numbered atop the slide...this is unit #U642....later units were not numbered. Although the pre-war conversion units are quite scarce, the optional factory wood case that comes with this unit is exceedingly RARE! Few were sold and less than a dozen are known to exist today. This conversion unit is in excellent overall condition. The original owner had it sent to the King Gun Sight Company for installation of the undercut King front sight. The unit also comes with a Kings Gun Works #307 recoil buffer/spring guide. The original blue finish shows some minor edge wear and very slight discoloration behind the front sight, but grades 95-97% overall. There is no rust or pitting. The mechanics appear to be in perfect working order and the bore is excellent as well. It comes complete with all parts including the milled ejector, barrel bushing, recoil spring, spring plug, slide stop, and original 2-tone magazine. The factory original wood case is also in very nice shape with handling wear and surface scratches, but no cracks, chips or repairs. The green velvet lining is in very good condition with some age and oil staining, but no holes or tears. The latch and hinges are in good working order. As a point of interest, one of these rare factory cases was sold on eBay back in 2007 with a final hammer price of $2500.00...without the conversion unit!
In order to protect the case, this conversion unit travels in an appropriately sized wood box (from an Army Corps of Engineers surveying tool). A Colt factory letter is included which shows that this conversion unit was shipped to the J.S. Oshman Company, Houston, Texas in April, 1940.

The history of this conversion unit is rather interesting as well. The original owner was one James Overton Winston, Jr.. A well-to-do Houston businessman and philanthropist, J.O. Winston, Jr. was a co-founder of St. John's School, the leading private prep school in Houston. Perhaps even more interesting, Mr. Winston was married to Ella Rice, who was billionaire Howard Hughes' first wife. She divorced the wildly eccentric Hughes in 1929 after he began dating various Hollywood starlets returning to her Houston roots and her first true love. The underside of the factory pistol box is lightly marked "J. O. Winston" along with some other illegible writing.

Of additional interest to the collector will be this Pre-War Colt National Match .45 automatic which was also owned by J.O. Winston, Jr. and shipped to the same retailer in Houston!

Buyer pays $20.00 shipping. There is NO FFL required for the transfer if this item and it will be shipped directly to the winning bidder.
