Model: Model 1, 3rd Issue

Serial Number: 93392

Year of Manufacture: 1861 - 1881

Action Type: Single Action Revolver, Tip Up Frame

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked "Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass. Pat. Apr. 3. 55 July 5. 59. Dec. 18. 60.". The serial number is on the heel.

Barrel Length: 3 1/8"

Sights / Optics: This revolver is mounted with a fixed front blade and a rear notch in the spring.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are Pearl. The grips are actual pearl, showing a great fit and some light aging. There is a chip at the left heel and the top of the left panel. The grips are otherwise sound and free of cracks. The grips rate in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Nickel

Finish Originality: Some surfaces have been cleaned, but the finish is original.

Bore Condition: The bore is rough, with patches of bright and the rifling is worn but visible the entire length. There is scattered pitting and erosion.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 65% of its metal finish. There is scattered mottling of the finish from age. There are scattered dings to the metal; on the right side of the barrel ahead of the cylinder, on the left side of the frame under the side plate and on the front strap behind the trigger guard. The hammer has very faint traces of case color. The cylinder shows the most pitting and evidence of some cleaning. The Screw heads are serviceable with wear. The markings are visible. Overall, this revolver rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this little revolver. The spring which houses the sight abouve the hammer is loose.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 1 was the first firearm manufactured by Smith & Wesson, with production commencing in 1857. It was also the first commercially available revolver to use rim fire cartridges instead of loose powder, musket ball, and percussion caps. It is a single-action, tip-up revolver holding seven .22 Short cartridges. In 1860, the Model 1, Second Issue was introduced with some significant changes. The Model 1, Third Issue followed in 1868, with notable alterations being a round barrel and a fluted cylinder. The Model 1 was discontinued in 1882. This is an important American firearm from Smith & Wesson, it is the first of the line and one of the first cartridge firearms every produced.

This exact gun was used in the October 2011 issue of The American Rifleman article titled "I have This Old Gun" by noted author and Field Editor, Rick Hacker. The article beautifully describes and pictures this gun, and the only thing we find issue with is Mr. Hacker's valuation, again, probably a bit low...

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This antique pistol can be sold to anyone 18 years of age with avlid ID.
