Description

Seller's Description:
LSB#: 120804LM13

Make: Remington

Model: US Navy Springfield 1870

Serial Number: NSN

Year of Manufacture: 1870-1873

Caliber: .43 Egyptian

Action Type: Single Shot Rolling Block

Markings: The receiver is marked “USN / Springfield / 1870”. The upper tang is marked “REMINGTONS PATENT / PAT. MAY 31 NOV ?? 1864 APRIL 17th 1868”. This rifle has both Remington and Springfield makers marks. The barrel is stamped “43” on top. The buttplate has a “U.S.” stamp on the top. The barrel ring has a “U” stamped on it.

Barrel Length: 20 ¼”

Sights / Optics: This rifle is mounted with a fixed front sight and a flip up rear sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is dark smooth military wood. There are heavy “cuts” in the forend on the left and right side behind the barrel band, and a 1” crack on the right side at the front. There are scattered dings mars and compression marks but no other visible losses. The dark stain hides most of these imperfections nicely. There is a design crudely carved in the buttstock on the left side that is undistinguishable, at the same spot is what looks like tracks from a tool? The LOP measures 13”. The stocks rate in about Good overall condition especially for an antique rifle.

Type of Finish: Blue, however non remains.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is deep. There is no apparent erosion.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 1% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows mostly smooth metal but with minor surface erosion. This rifle has been maintained over the years. The receiver shows remnants of case hardening with discoloration and light pinprick erosion. This is not unexpected for a gun of this age. The Screw heads are in servicable condition showing some wear and minor disfiguration. The markings are clear. The upper tang is slightly difficult to read. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition for an antique rifle.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer locks back and is released with trigger pull. The rolling block functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: You can talk about this rifle all day. It was built U.S., assembled else there, used there, and returned here. Springfield used Remington’s patent to assemble the action, then sold the overproduction stock overseas for the Franco – Persian war. Then it was re-barreled most likely by the Whitney Arms Company (“43” on the top of the barrel was a proof mark). From the Remington Society web page: “The Whitney Arms Company made their own variation of a rolling block action, which was the subject of patent disputes between Whitney and Remington. They were also known for buying surplus parts from Springfield Armory, Remington, and other companies, and making up guns for export. Other than the usual markings on the Springfield receiver, the only other marking is a 43 on the top of the barrel, near the breech witness mark. Notice the similarities between this gun and the Whitney-Laidley Model 1872. This is a conversation piece, is very collectable, and very unique.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This antique rifle can be sold to anyone 18 years of age with valid ID.
