Description

Seller's Description:
LSB#: 120716RF14

Make: Savage Arms Company

Model: Model 1903

Serial Number: 18693

Year of Manufacture: 1903 - 1916

Caliber: .22 Short, Long and Long Rifle

Action Type: Slide (Pump) Action Detachable Clip Style Magazine Fed Rifle

Markings: The top flat of the octagon barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE / SAVAGE ARMS CO.UTICA.NEW YORK.U.S.A. and “22 S.L.,&L.R.”. The lower tang is marked “18693”.

Barrel Length: 24”

Sights / Optics: This rifle is mounted with a Marble style brass bead blade front sight set in a dovetail. The rear sight is a “V” notch adjustable for elevation by a screw and drift adjustable for windage.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The butt stock is smooth walnut with a curved metal butt plate and round knob pistol grip. There is one ¼” chip missing on the right side about even with the end of the tang safety. There are numerous small compression marks, but no cracks. The LOP measures 13 ¼” from the front of the trigger to the rear of the butt stock. The fore arm is grooved walnut with very minor compression and handling marks. The stocks rate in about Fine overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: All Original

Bore Condition: The bore is almost bright and the rifling is shallow. There is mild erosion throughout the length of the barrel. The muzzle crown is good at the bore.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 80% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows a gray patina. The lower tang, trigger guard and left receiver flat are smooth to the touch with mild surface erosion. There are at least three dings among the top of the receiver and the barrel area where one can catch a fingernail. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. This rifle is a take-down model using a large screw head on the right side of the receiver. We have not fired this rifle.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: One seven round magazine is provided. The magazine appears to be in about Fine overall condition.

Our Assessment: The Savage Model 1903 is unusual in that it is a pump action rifle that does not have a tubular magazine. Instead it uses a detachable clip style magazine that would appear at home with a bolt action rifle. It features a bolt hold-open feature when the magazine is empty. By removing the large screw head on the receiver this rifle can be taken down for compact storage or transport, and this also allows easy access to the chamber and bore for cleaning purposes. The Model 1903 is well made and reliable, with at least one example fired a documented 42,000 times at the St. Louis World’s fair.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This rifle can be transferred in California and is C&R eligible.
