Description

Seller's Description:
LSB#: 120723RY01

Make: Springfield

Model: 1816/1835. This rifle is shown both as a separate model of 1835, and as a continuation of the 1816 flintlock musket. Please see our write-up below.

Serial Number: NSN

Year of Manufacture: 1839

Caliber: .69

Action Type: Single Shot Percussion

Markings: The plate on the left side of the stock is marked “S”, the top strap behind the barrel is marked “1839”. The barrel is marked with a “P” in a circle, the Springfield eagle head, “V”, and “6”. The right side of the lock behind the hammer is marked “Spring / Field / 1839”. In front of the lock the sideplate is marked “U.S. “ with an eagle. The stcok has two cartouche marks. Please see “Stock Configuration” below. The buttplate is marked “US”.

Barrel Length: 42”

Sights / Optics: This rifle is mounted with a fixed front sight on the front barrel band, and a notch in the hammer for a rear sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are smooth military wood. There are two cartouche marks; behind the lower tang looks like “RH”, and on the left side of the stock above the trigger which is hard to read perhaps “RH” as well. There are nicks in the forend on the left side of the second barrel band, and a gouge with a missing chip (old) on the right side at the third barrel band. There are a few scattered compression marks. There are no visible cracks. The stocks may have been re-finished at some point, the buttstock is a bit shy of the buttplate all around. There is much remaining finish on the rifle now but age unknown. The LOP measures approx. 13 ½” from the trigger to the back of the buttplate.. The stocks rate in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: None Remaining

Finish Originality: All Original

Bore Condition: The bore is smooth and dark. There does not appear to be much erosion present. A few patches came out a bit brown.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about zero% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows some type of “shellac” like substance on the metal. There is surface erosion and brown streaks on the metal all around. The barrel bands show some pitting. The Screw heads are sharp and show little use. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good for its age condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer cocks back and holds, and the trigger releases the hammer. We did not fire this percussion rifle.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: A sling which appears to be original is provided. There is no ramrod.

Our Assessment: From Wikipedia: “The Model 1835 was produced by the Springfield Armory, and was also produced by the Harper's Ferry Armory and other contractors. It was a smooth bore musket and fired a .69 caliber round ball. The Model 1835 is sometimes considered to be its own model number, but is often considered to be just a continuation of the Model 1816 Musket. The barrel was slightly longer than the Model 1816 and the total weight of the Model 1835 was slightly higher, but otherwise the Model 1835 was very similar to the Model 1816. Most 1835 muskets had the flintlock replaced with a percussion lock during the 1840s and 1850's. The model 1835 was used by both the North and South during the Civil War and was also used in the Mexican-American War.[3]”.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This antique rifle can be sold to anyone 18 years of age with valid ID.

  Questions from GunAuction.com Users...
(Public)
Q:  Your Springfield is a M1816 not a M1835. The model 1835 had a different front band . Look just like a M1842 with the curve inbetween the two bands on front band. Also the metal plate that the lock screws go through the stock is shaped like a straight(L). Not like the m1816 flower curve L shape plate. Go to the place where you got the M1835 info and look at picture of the parts I am talking about and you will see you do not have a M1835. Good luck you have a very very nice M1816. 09/19/2012
A:  Thank you for the info. We wish we had this info on the first day of the auction not the last. We learn a lot from our clients. Lew. 09/20/2012
