Serial Number: 030 149. This is the full number found on the bottom of the top strap when the cylinder is removed.

Year of Manufacture: 1890-1892 This revolver qualifies as an antique.

Caliber: .38 S&W

Action Type: Double and Single Action Top Break Revolver

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “Harrington & Richardson Arms Co. / Worcester Mass. U.S.A. Pat’d Oct. 4’87”. The bottom of the top strap is marked “030149”, this is visible when the cylinder is removed. The back of the cylinder is marked “149” on the star and on the cylinder. The left side of the grip frame is marked “149”. The inside of the grip panels are scratch marked “149”.

Barrel Length: 3 ¼”

Sights / Optics: The gun is mounted with a blade front sight and a notch in the latch rear sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are hard rubber with target logos. The checkering has become slightly smooth and the grips fit very well. There are no chips or cracks in the panels. The grips rate in about Excellent overall condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is gray and the rifling is shallow. There is erosion in the bore, but our consignor would regularly shoot this revolver.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 80% of its metal finish. There is wear and discoloration on both sides of the trigger and trigger guard. There is mild pinprick erosion mostly on the right side of the frame and some surface scratching on the left side of the frame. The top of the barrel near the muzzle has some discoloration/flaking. There is light surface scratching on the cylinder all around and light pinprick erosion on the hammer. The Screw heads are sharp and show little use. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly both single and double action. The lockup is tight with just a tiny bit of play. We did not fire this revolver, though our consignor did.

Our Assessment: This is a good example of an early top break .38 S&W revolver. This revolver can be used for home protection, for costume wear, and for Cowboy Action Shooting side matches. This one is in far better condition than is usually encountered. Good luck!

USPS or UPS Insured shipping will cost $20.

Your item will be shipped within 1 week of receipt of good funds, usually the next day. If you are in Southern California, you are welcome to pick your item up and complete the transfer at our shop in Simi Valley (M-F, 8-5).

This gun can only be shipped to an FFL or C&R, and it will be shipped from an FFL. It is your responsibility to ensure that the gun is legal to own and receive in your area. If you would like to be notified when we receive your payment, please obtain a tracking number from your carrier. We receive about 40 checks a day and do not have the staff required to email everyone when we receive checks.

Full payment on non-layaway items is required within 14 days. We accept Cashiers Checks, Money Orders, Cash and Personal Checks. No Credit Cards or electronic payments are accepted. To help us properly apply your payment, please indicate what item you have purchased when payment and/or FFL are sent. If you would like to be notified when we receive your payment, please obtain a tracking number from your carrier. CA Sales tax applies to CA buyers (7.25%).

Layaways are offered on all items, requiring a 20% non refundable down payment within 7 days of the auction’s close and the balance within 60 days. We do not require prior notice to place an item on the layaway. No returns are accepted on layaway items and the item will be considered abandoned after 60 days.

Successful Bidder Instructions:

You will be invoiced by the morning following the sale. This invoice will include totals for the sale and all instructions.

If you win an item and are not willing or able to complete the sale, you will be liable for 5% of the sale price.

Returns (less shipping) are accepted within 3 days of when the item is delivered with signature confirmation. Returns are very costly for both the buyer and for us, so please ask all of your questions before bidding and please be sure you can legally purchase this item.
