Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”. The top of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS USA / PATENTED FEB.6 06,SEPT 14, 09.DEC 29 14” The right side of the barrel is marked “38 & W.SPECIAL CTG”. Inside the shroud is marked “B”, “39011”. The yoke cut is marked “H” and “54566”. The yoke is marked “54566”. The rear face of the cylinder is marked “39011”. The left side of the frame is marked with a small S&W logo. The bottom of the grip is marked “39011” and the right side of the grip is marked “J”, “B” and “8” near the grip pin. The right side of the frame is marked “MADE IN U.S.A.”.

Barrel Length: 5”

Sights / Optics: The gun is mounted with a square notch rear sight, machined into the top strap. The front sight is a fixed round blade that has been customized in the rear, slightly filed down, serrated and colored orange.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are target stocks with S&W medallions and marked “10 1981” on the inside bottom of the right grip. The left grip has a minor loss of finish where it’s relieved for cartridge ejection. The right grip has some finish loss at the rear of checkering. Please see photos. The grips rate in about Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original with Cold Blue Touch-up

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp There is some very mild erosion or fouling near the forcing cone.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 65% of its metal finish. Large portions of the surface show wear and use, but have started to show a gray patina that looks appropriate to this handgun. The backstrap has been checkered and reblued. The ejector rod is shiny and bare where it is pushed into the yoke. There are light drag marks on the cylinder. There are marks to the metal under the cold blue touch-ups and general thinning after. Some of the finish has drifted to a nice and light patina. The screw heads appear only lightly touched. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this gun.

Our Assessment: This is a .38 special revolver on a .44/45 frame. It was developed to shoot loads too hot for the smaller framed .38 special, and prior to the introduction of the .357 magnum. It is a 5 screw, square butt “N” frame with a serrated trigger and a checked spur hammer. It has a 5” barrel that was very popular with law enforcement as they moved into patrolling where they had to be seated in cars. This particular specimen has been modified to make the sights visible more quickly, and for better recoil control with the checkered backstrap. This gun is still a very viable shooter. It could legitimately be carried by private security, or used in IDPA or ICORE competitions. It has all the features many people would choose for a revolver to keep for home defense. It is not often that this model revolver comes up for sale, it would be a shame to let this one get away.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This pistol is a C&R and can be sold I California. This gun s also available for a private party transfer at our shop in Simi Valley. This does not apply to out of state buyers.

If you are in Southern California, you are welcome to pick your item up and complete the transfer at our shop in Simi Valley (M-F, 8-5).

This gun can only be shipped to an FFL or C&R, and it will be shipped from an FFL. It is your responsibility to ensure that the gun is legal to own and receive in your area. If you would like to be notified when we receive your payment, please obtain a tracking number from your carrier. We receive about 40 checks a day and do not have the staff required to email everyone when we receive checks.

Payment:

Full payment on non-layaway items is required within 14 days. We accept Cashiers Checks, Money Orders, Cash and Personal Checks. No Credit Cards or electronic payments are accepted. To help us properly apply your payment, please indicate what item you have purchased when payment and/or FFL are sent. If you would like to be notified when we receive your payment, please obtain a tracking number from your carrier. We receive about 40 checks a day and do not have the staff required to email everyone when we receive checks.

CA Sales tax applies to CA buyers (7.25%).

Layaways are offered on all items, requiring a 20% non refundable down payment within 7 days of the auction’s close and the balance within 60 days. We do not require prior notice to place an item on the layaway. No returns are accepted on layaway items and the item will be considered abandoned after 60 days.

Successful Bidder Instructions:

You will be invoiced by the morning following the sale. This invoice will include totals for the sale and all instructions.

If you win an item and are not willing or able to complete the sale, you will be liable for 5% of the sale price.

Returns (less shipping) are accepted within 3 days of when the item is delivered with signature confirmation. Returns are very costly for both the buyer and for us, so please ask all of your questions before bidding and please be sure you can legally purchase this item.
