Description

Seller's Description:
LSB#: 120209SM03

Make: Colt

Model: 1851 Navy

Serial Number: The trigger guard is stamped 22135. The frame and barrel assembly are stamped 32879.

Year of Manufacture: Unknown – We’re a bit puzzled on this one. The frame dates 1855 (if it was Colt),and the lack of Italian proof marks makes us wonder.

Caliber: .36 Cal. Cap and Ball

Action Type: Single Action Percussion Revolver

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked with an inward-facing arrow, followed by "Address. Col: Colt. London." followed by an inward facing arrow. The left side of the frame is marked "Colt's Patent." The cylinder is marked with the correct naval battle scene, and engraved with "Colt's Patent No." and "Engraved by W. L. Ormsby New York', and "Engaged 16 May 1843", around the circumference of the cylinder. “32879” is stamped on the main pin, ram rod, frame and back strap. The trigger guard is stamped “22135”. There is a “D” on the underside of the barrel, forward of the ramrod catch. The wedge is unmarked.

Barrel Length: 7 1/2 inches.

Sights / Optics: The gun is mounted with a brass post front sight, and a notched hammer rear sight..

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are varnished wood. The grips rate in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blued steel finish on the cylinder, barrel, trigger, and backstrap. The rammer, frame, and hammer, are all case hardened. The trigger guard is brass.

Finish Originality: Uncertain, There appears to be a mix of parts.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no visible erosion.

Overall Condition: This gun retains about 95% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows very little wear, with the only worthy of mention being a few marks to the brass. The barrel has either been refinished or is from a later production gun. The color case hardening is vivid and has been coated with varnish at some point in its life. When this was done is unknown to us. The Screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about Fine - Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions smoothly and correctly, although we have not test-fired this gun..

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This comes in a fitted, red felt lined case, of indeterminate vintage. It also comes with a blank cylinder, devoid of engraving and proof stamps. This blank cylinder looks about new.

Our Assessment: This one has us scratching our heads. The pristine finish and sharp case coloring scream "replica" or 2nd Gen Colt, but the mismatched numbers and British proof marks indicate that it might be a restored London / Hartford hybrid - this comes from the Colt Collector's association: “The late Hartford-London Navies from approximately serial number 38000 to almost 43000 were assembled back in Hartford after the London factory closed and the surplus parts were shipped back to Hartford. They were then shipped back to London to be sold through Colt’s Agency at 14 Pall Mall, London. By this time subtle changes had taken place on some of the revolvers with a beveled bullet cut-out on the right side of the barrel lug, Hartford-type back-straps and the London address with just a dash either end instead of the pointed arrows".

If nothing else, It's an interesting puzzle, and we invite your knowledgeable comments and suggestions on this one. One client suggested "Uberti", but we don't know. In any case, it's a very nice pistol, and features an exceptionally smooth action. Every once in a while one comes in that we just cannot make a conclusion on, this is that one.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This pistol can be sold in California.
