Description

Seller's Description:
US Springfield Model 1888 Trapdoor Rifle, manufactured in 1891, serial #520228, .45-70 Govt. BLACK POWDER CARTRIDGE ONLY, 32 1/2" barrel with a very good bore having scattered light pitting and strong rifling. The barrel, bands, one piece triggerguard, and lockplate with three position tumbler and buttplate bear a brown patina with a few spots of light oxidation on the heel of the buttplate. The 1873 dated low arch breechblock bears an even balance of light brown and pewter gray and the lockplate is a darker bluish-brown and is a bit shy of the wood. The walnut stock rates good overall with strong SWP 1891 cartouche, firing proof and small rack numbers on heel and right side of stock with handling marks and remnants of an added red paint on belly of buttstock. Rifle wears a proper front sight, Buffington rear sight and ramrod bayonet. A very good condition 1888 Trapdoor rifle. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE 1891: The Dalton Gang committed its first crime, a train robbery in Alila, Calif. on Southern Pacific #17. Carnegie Hall (then named Music Hall) had its opening night in New York City. Tchaikovsky was the guest conductor.
