Description

Seller's Description:
TEST

This auction is for a Winchester model 1903 22 Winchester Automatic Rimfire rifle.   Mechanically this gun functions well and condition is good.
Note: This rifle will not fire the common .22 rimfire short, long or long rifle cartridge.  It will only chamber the .22 Winchester Auto round which is still available but harder to find. Also, the butt has a small amount of movement from front to rear.

In 1903, Winchester introduced the Model 1903 semiautomatic rifle.  Designed by T. C. Johnson this was the first in a series of Winchester semiautomatic rifles.  The 1903 was replaced by the Model 63 in 1933.
This replacement was necessitated by the problem of having to have a special .22 caliber cartridge (Winchester Automatic Rimfire) to achieve proper blow-back of the bolt in the Model 1903.  In addition, the Model 63 was chambered for the newly developed .22 LR cartridge, and this solved the blow-back problem with universally available ammunition.
The Model 1903 was manufactured from 1903 through 1932 with approximately 126,000 gun produced during that period.  All guns had a barrel length of 20" and had a walnut forearm and a straight or pistol-grip stock.  All 1903 rifles had a crescent metal butt plate.  The loading port was on the side of the stock and the magazine was accessed through the rear of the butt.  The tubular magazine in the butt stock held 10 Winchester Automatic Rimfire cartridges.

The .22 Winchester Automatic (also known as the .22 Winchester Auto and occasionally .22 Win Auto) is a .22 in (5.6mm) American rimfire rifle cartridge.
Introduced for the Winchester Model 1903 semiautomatic rifle, the .22 Win Auto was never used in any other firearm.  It will not chamber correctly in other .22 rimfire weapons, nor will other .22 rimfire ammunition, including the very dimensionally-similar .22 Remington Automatic, interchange with it. This feature was to prevent use of black powder rounds, which were still popular when it first appeared, from being used in the M1903, resulting in powder residue rapidly clogging the action and rendering the weapon inoperable. The power of the .22 Win Auto is comparable to the .22 Long rimfire, and while it fires a heavier bullet,  it offers no performance edge on either the .22 Long or the very much more common .22 Long Rifle.

  Questions from GunAuction.com Users...
(Public)
Q:  Is the win 1903 all origial Thanks 12/23/2011
A:  One of the screws holding the handguards appears to be non original. Also the finish on the front handguard appears to have been refinished. The metal appears to have been cleaned with steel wool. Thanks for viewing our auction. 12/23/2011
