Description

Seller's Description:
LSB#: 111020TT02

Make: Savage

Model: 1899, Model 99

Serial Number: 404000

Year of Manufacture: 1941

Caliber: .300 Savage

Action Type: Lever Action Rifle

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “Savage Arms Corporation / Utica. N.Y. – Made In U.S.A.”. The left side of the barrel is marked .300 Savage and “SP” in a circle. The right side of the barrel is marked “Hi-Pressure Steel Proof Tested. The serial number “404000” is found on the underside of the receiver, in front of the lever.

Barrel Length: 24”

Sights / Optics: The gun is mounted with a front dovetailed ramp, with a block set in the dovetail. The rear barrel dovetail is filled with a block marked “Marble”. A Weaver K2.5 scope is mounted with a one-piece Redfield mount to the receiver. The scope interior is very clean, with a fine horizontal crosshair and half length tapered center post. The exterior lenses are a bit dirty, but cleanable and this is a very usable scope. The scope is marked “Patented / El Paso Tex. U.S.A.”. The exterior of the scope tube shows finish loss, scratches and pinprick erosion. Leather scope caps are provided.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are checkered and oiled wood. The wood is a bit dry with handling and storage marks throughout, none severe. There is a hairline crack starting at the right rear of the forearm. A good oiling will help this wood considerably. The LOP measures 13 ½”. The stocks rate in about very good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue, Color Case Hardened Lever

Finish Originality: Factory Original

Bore Condition: The bore is near bright, with just a bit of fouling and the rifling is sharp. There is no visible erosion.

Overall Condition: This gun retains about 80% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows some surface marking, namely on the left side of the receiver and edge wear. Both receiver flats and the scope body show some scattered surface rust, as does the front left side of the barrel. The right side of the barrel, forward of the wood shows a few spots of erosion that was cleaned up, thinning the finish in the process. The Screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions as designed though we have not test fired this gun.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The gun comes with the scope, the scope mounts and a leather scope cover.

Our Assessment: This is a quality field rifle with a great reputation. The caliber is .300 Savage which has been around forever and is a highly regarded caliber, especially by Big Game Hunters and Savage connoisseurs. This gun will make the collector and shooter very happy, and will work on your C&R license.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This rifle can be transferred in California, and is C&R eligible.
