I got an email from someone who made a good point and I would like to add it. I know I get a little carried away sometimes on the History of the pieces and don't talk enough about condition. There are 3 places for serial numbers on these Ortgies. Under the barrel, inside the slide, and on the barrel. Both pistols have all correct serial numbers. The lands and grooves on the right hand twist of the bore are in good condition. The .25 has a little pitting but for the most part they are in good condition. They break down for cleaning easily. Mechanical function is very good.
7.65 (.32 Caliber U.S.) and a 6.35 (.25 caliber) Both produced by Deutsche Werke in Erfurt Erfurt (German pronunciation: ['???f???t]) is the capital city of Thuringia and is the main city nearest to the geographical centre of Germany, located 100 km SW of Leipzig, 150 km N of Nuremberg and 180 km SE of Hannover.
Although German, Heinrich Ortgies lived in Liege for several years. Liege Belgium was the European firearms center for firearms like the West Bank of France was for impressionist painters. Heinrich designed an automatic pistol, patented in 1918. He returned to Erfurt after hostilities had ceased, to begin making the 7.65mm Ortgies pistol. Success was considerable, even in the depressed post WW I market, Upwards of 10,000 were made. DeutscheWerke of Erfurt made the inventor an offer too attractive to refuse, taking over the patents, stock and tools. Ortgies himself appears to have taken no further interest in firearms.
Crown over N ,smokeless powder, proof-marks on the frame and slide indicate the testing of a civilian or military (civilian in this case) pistol that has passed inspection. Both the .25 and .32 have a very good right hand twist barrel rifling lands and grooves. Both have stylized cat medallions on each wooden grip. Wooden grips are excellent the left side has the button release for the back-strap
grip safety. These pistols are very accurate and easily concealable. Blueing is also excellent with 90-95%. Frame under barrel marked GERMANY and serial numbers of which there were approximately 180,000 of the Cal 6.35 mm (25) about twice that number made in caliber 7.65.
Deutsche Werke was a German shipbuilding company founded in 1925 when Kaiserliche Werft Kiel and other shipyards were merged. It came as a result of the Treaty of Versailles after World War I that forced the German defense industry to shrink. The company was owned by the government of the Weimar Republic and its headquarter was in Berlin.
Deutsche Werke started building merchant ships but when the Nazi Party gained power in 1933 the production was changed to naval ships. Among the ships built here was the German battlecruiser Gneisenau. The plant was destroyed in World War II.
