This is an original, numbers matching, non-import German Mauser Gew 98, which is chambered in 8x57mm Mauser and was made in 1915 at Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken Berlin (German Weapons and Munitions Works) also known as "DWM." The rifle has all it's parts matching including the rear sight, bolt assembly, stock, magazine follower and floorplate to name a few (see photos). As mentioned, this is a non-import rifle and there are no import stamps on the barrel.
The gun has a 29" barrel with a shiny bore that's still in good to very good condition, however there is some pitting in the bore. The gun has the correct sights (front blade and rear Lange sight), barrel bands, bolt, and one-piece wood stock, however the hand guard, field cleaning rod, front sight hood, rear trigger guard screw and sling are missing, otherwise the gun is completely intact. The stock has been cut in the middle of the barrel band, however the front portion of the stock is still attached to the gun (see photos). The top of the receiver ring is stamped "DEUTSCHE WAFFEN-UND MUNITIONSFABRIKEN BERLIN 1915" with "41", while the left-side of the receiver ring is stamped with a serial number of "9560" and what appears to be a "Prussion" proof mark. The right-side of receiver ring has three other stamps that are difficult to make-out (see photos).
There is an "S" stamped on top of the barrel, behind the rear sight. The serial number is also stamped on the left-side of the barrel at the breech and there is also a proof mark stamped below (see photos). As mentioned all the serial numbers match with the number being stamped on the following parts; barrel bands, rear sight, barrel, receiver ring, bolt handle, bolt shroud, cocking piece, magazine follower, floorplate, action screw and stock. Due to the age of the gun we decided not to remove the stock from the action, since there's a chance that the barrel bands may damage the stock. Please do not ask about any proof marks that may be hidden under the stock since we will not remove the stock from the action. However, we believe as original as the gun is, it's probably stamped with the serial number and possibly additional proof marks also. The serial number is also stamped on the buttplate with a "6" (or upside-down "g") stamped below. Finally, the serial number is stamped on the bottom of the stock, behind the rear sling swivel attachment along with appears to be a crown over a circle. There's also what appears to be a "crown over an H" stamped in the bottom of the stock, just behind the trigger guard (see photos).
The metal and wood on this rifle have what appears to be their original finish. The barrel still has about 80% or better blue. The rest of the metal (bayonet lug, barrel, band, receiver, etc.) show some remnants of blue, but have mostly turned patina. There is some minor surface rust in a few places on the metal and the front of the trigger guard has a bit of pitting, otherwise the metal is in good condition for the age of the gun.
As mentioned the stock has been cut in the middle of the barrel band (see photos). There's some scratches and chips in the stock, with some of the scratches being below the surface. There's a crack in the left-side of the stock near the heel (top) and the laminate that separates the top of the stock from the bottom is starting to separate (see photos). There's also some white paint on the left-side of the stock, above the trigger guard and there are numerous spots of paint also on the left-side of the stock, between the trigger guard and butt of the stock. As mentioned the hand guard is missing from the stock (see photos).
We did not test-fire this gun, however the action is smooth and the bolt locks-up tight. Overall the gun is in very good condition mechanically and good in appearance. Serial #9560. STK. #16530.
If you're Mauser collector you might consider this numbers matching gun for your collection or since the stock has been cut you could also turn this gun into a great sporting rifle. Put your bid in today!
