Description

Seller's Description:

This is an original Civil War issued Model 1860 Spencer carbine. The 1860 Spencer is a .52- caliber, rimfire, repeater that used a copper or brass rimfire cased cartridge known as the 56-56. Modern components for making ammunition are readily available from different sources such as S&S Firearms in Glendale, NY and Lodgewood Mfg. at lodgewood.com.
This seven shot repeater was fed through a tubular magazine in the butt and into the receiver. Lowering the operating lever and opening the breech feeds a cartridge into the chamber. The hammer is then cocked and the arm is fired. Dropping the lever after firing then ejects the empty cartridge and brings the next round into position for the next firing.

The 1860 Spencer carbines were issued between 1863 and 1865 with a serial number range from 11,000 to 61,000. The serial number on this Spencer is 46,085. Many Spencers were converted after the War to .50 caliber for use in the Indian wars by sleeving the barrel with a 3-grooved liner. This carbine HAS NOT been converted and is ORIGINAL with its 22" six- groove barrel.

The top front flat of the receiver is stamped in 3 lines "SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS. PAT'D MARCH 6 1860" The last line is weak.

Two weak cartouches are visible on the left hand side of the buttstock just past the saddle ring bar. One cartouche has the letters "ECW" which may be that of E.C. Wheeler, the military inspector assigned to inspect both Springfield and Spencer longarms from 1862 through 1882. The second cartouche is a larger circular type but weaker and I cannot make out the initials.

This original Civil War Spencer carbine is in fully functioning, working condition and is shootable with the proper ammunition. The lock is crisp and the action lockup is tight with absolutely no play. The tubular magazine is original, complete, functioning, and without play in the buttstock. The bore's 6 groove rifling is strong and has some sporadic pitting but nothing serious. The overall finish of this carbine has turned an even pleasant appearing dark patina. The buttstock has no cracks or missing pieces nor any repairs. There is a very slight gap between the stock and the buttplate which may have been from water contact with the stock at some time past. The forend has a sliver of wood less that .125 of an inch wide missing along the top edge on both sides which was probably splintered at some point in time and was trimmed to clean up the rough edges. The buttstock and forend have not been sanded and exhibits the usual assortment of dings that would be consistant with any weapon that had seen use during the war and after. All screw head slots are in decent condition. The saddle ring and bar are present and have turned a dark patina. The rear sight spring is a replacement spring and one screw on the rear sling swivel is a modern replacement.
This is a very nice original and collectable, Civil War carbine for the collector or the reenactor.

Please notice my $30.00 shipping, insurance, and handling charge which is in addition to your bid on this carbine and take that in to consideration when entering your maximum bid that you are willing to place.
