He is indeed a very lucky young Marine. The back-channel stuff I'm getting from 3/6 (sorry, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment) says that a considerable number of the Afghan snipers they are encountering are armed with Dragunovs (7.62 x 54) and unlike the Iraqis, know how to use them.
I support every soldier 100 percent and regard them all as the finest Americans we have. However we are in a country the Russians back out of because it was a tough fight. Many factors but time will tell.
Excerpted from a CBS/AP report: "U.S. and Afghan troops encountered skilled sharpshooters and better-fortified Taliban positions Thursday, indicating that insurgent resistance in their logistics and opium-smuggling centre was far from crushed."
That's the bad news. The good news is that Marine Recon counter-sniper teams are being inserted to deal with them. I would NOT want to go one-on-one in a shooting match to the death with those guys.
