Pretty sure the H&R single shot was chambered for .357 Maximum at one time.

Looking at the loads shown for the .264 Winchester on Hornady's online data center, if you were to use a 129 gr. Hornady SST with a BC of .480 and you're able to obtain the listed 3100 fps with the maximum load of H4831 shown (of course, use the starting load and work up, stopping at any signs of excess pressure) and you sight in for maximum point blank range by sighting in at 2.48" high at 100 yds., your bullet impact will be 3.5" low at 300 yds and 14.22" low at 400 yds.

Now cut 200 fps from that muzzle velocity (a velocity you may be able to attain in your rifle) and there is little practical difference. At 2900 fps muzzle velocity, sight in for MPB range at 2.64" high at 100 and at 300 yds you are 4.08" low; at 400 yds 16.52" low. A 2.25" difference at 400 yds. don't mean squat! Laughing

Just a thought: Using a little faster burning powder such as IMR 4350 might get you a little closer to the published velocities in the data center with a 24" barrel

truncatedcone Have you chronographed the factory ammo? In barrels shorter than 26" the .264 will probably disappoint those expecting to see the velocities published by the ammo makers or shown in the reloading manuals.

When all I could see was the little red X, my thoughts were: it must be a "doe" with "real nice rack"

Tom, double check the Game Digest, but I believe the requirement for expanding bullets in PA is only for Big Game. No mention of bullet types are made regarding small game or furbearers. FMJs are often used for hunting furbearers because of the small entrance and exit holes.

Well, OOOOOORahhh Uncle Buck! I've never seen a deer taken with buckshot. Do they run far after being hit?

It's not legal here in the Western end of PA, however you can use it in some of the counties near Philadelphia (Special Regulations Area)
