Thread Title: "9/1 Picture Server Outage"
AA-bob

Our picture server failed this morning between 2 and 3 AM. As a result pictures and thumbnails in auctions will not display. New auctions with pictures can not be posted as theree is nowhere for the pictures to reside.

AuctionArms staff is working on it and we'll post updates as they develop. Hopefully this will not be a long outage but have no ETA on recovery at this point.

Petesguns Thanks Bob and Manny et.al. Your efforts are appreciated. We all just have to blow off a little steam now and then, and the most convenient target usually gets blasted. Good luck!

axolotl Let me complement AA. From my point, as someone who is barely computer literate, it is a minor miracle that you folks have been able to do as well as you have. I believe that some of our people are just venting thier frustrations when they take you to task for service problems. Patience all and thanks. axolotl

We're back up. Since about 7PM or so. Just got back into the office from our Network Operations Center and the last order of business before crashing is to let you all know we stabalized the servers around 7:00PM for service. Our pictures server is back up and running and therefore Auctions have been posting since around then. We had an unrelated double whammy as we also lost a SQL server today and therfore couldn't accept bids for most of the day. Internal mail was also affected, so if you tried to send on and didn't get your confirming copy, to be certain, please resend it.

More good news is that no auctions were lost so shouldn't experience the problems like we saw 2 weeks ago when we did loose some autions.>/p>

Appreciate your understanding and cooperation while we were whipping all the little electronic gremlins back in place.

(no avatar) Bob we had 13 Auctions that ended by noon yesterday and they were still receiving last minute bids as normal. The SQL problem must have been later in the day.

We will be posting again this morning.Over the past year AA's good service has built up a reserve tank of good will between us but this month that reserve tank took a big hit.I think I speak for many when I state that let's prepare for a rebuilding of the good will and make whatever upgrades can be done so we can have lots of warm fuzzy days here.Let's build up the reserves again. To all I wish a good holiday weekend and Godspeed to the death of the picture server demon!LOL!

AA-bob SPORTSMANSSUPPLY, yes, the SQL problems arose after 12:00 PDST yesterday. Auctions that were scheduled to end after 13:00 PDST and before 20:00 PDST on 9-1-05 were extended by roughly a day to 20:00 PDST 9-2-05. Buy-it-Nows were allowed to close during that time frame if someone selected that alternative. Auctions without bids were allowed to close as scheduled.

As a young Ensign I worked for a old Destroyer Squadron Commodore. He had a saying that has always stayed with me, I guess because it's so true. He liked to say "One Aw, S**t is worth about 1,000 Atta boys".

Well we've earned a few technical "Aw, S**ts this month and are painfully aware of the quality service "Atta Boys" we burned up in the process.

We are making some expensive and extensive changes in our server complex to manage down the impact to our customers' perceived service levels when the inevitable but unforseeable server failure occurs.

We are building robust redundantcy and fail-over features into our systems. We are searching out and eliminating and/or correcting all "single point of failure" potential and are enhancing our back-up procedures and capabilities. This will take a little time but should be completed within the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, our system, which over the past year (up until the past two weeks) has been very stable and with a very good historical level of "up time", will continue to serve you, we think as capably as it has in the past (prior to these recent server issues.

We have a goal of giving you the "dial tone" every time you hit our site, so much so that you will literally take it for granted and never have to give it another thought. As our technical solution comes on line we think you'll be getting that level of internet service.

Now, my technical expertise in these matters is usually surpassed by those of a broken red brick, so I can't get into all the neat techno bable details my partners could tell you all about (high "eye-glaze" factor for me). However, I do understand a bit about risk analysis and system process evaluation and think we've hit on a pretty "Aw, S**t" proof solution.

I will of course continue my commitment to earning your business and "atta Boys" through providing you the best customer service I can in the other aspects of our business.

gov2mod Just for the record, here is 10,000 "Atta Boys" from me. I may ask questions but I rarely complain about any of your technical problems. When the site is down I just patiently wait as I know the best are on it right now. I think all of you at Auction Arms just need to have some cold beer and quality bourbon.

(no avatar) I don't know if it is just me over here in the hills, however, I am getting X's instead of photos this morning. You may need to tie a "square knot" in the rope - LOL
