Thread Title: "Trapdoor Springfield Bayonet"
(no avatar)

I was hunting around the Brimfield Flea Markets today and picked up an old bayonet.  The blade wasn't in too bad shape, but the rest  was pretty rusted. You could faintly make out a US mark under the rust. It cleaned up relatively well, and I was able to unfeeze the locking ring.  I can also now see a 14 under the US.  The blade measures 14 inches.  What surprised me is it fits my Trapdoor, as the bayonets I've seen were much longer.  I'm really happy about this as I've been looking for a bayonet for it, just not wanting to pay what they cost.  Was this standard issue, or maybe an older Civil War-era issue?  Any information about this bayonet and its value would be appreciated.  Thanks, Ken

Well, this is a first for me.  No info on a 14 inch socket bayonet for a Trapdoor?  I can't find anything on the Net.  I've either got a find, or a coincidence, or it's a dumb question.  By the way it  started at $40, but I got it down to $32.

Kenden - Contact Keith Rush at http://www.trapdoors.com/about.php .  If there's anyone who can tell you about your bayonet, he can.

I was thinking it was for a cadet rifle, I found this forum were someone is discussing a 14 inch bayonet. If it is a cadet bayonet you did good.

And since yours has "14" stamped on it, more than liely is NOT a shortened bayonet.

Tim at College Hill seems to think it's a reworked cadet bayonet, shortened as no 14 inch ones were made for a Model 1873.  He thinks the "14" could also be a rack number not the length, but I don't know about that.  The forum from Carbob is interesting. I'm waiting to hear from Keith.  I'll keep you posted.
