Many "trade" gunsellers in the UK imported Belgian guns and had them larked with their own names. These were required to be prrofed after import, and so there should be prrof marks. However, without good pictures and at least descriptions of the markings, it's hard to know. However, MANY more copies of Webleys were made than there were Webleys, and the Bulldog was a very popular item to copy. Highly unlikely it was a copy of some kind actually made in Britain, that would have been far more expensive than importation from Belgium or Germany or perhaps France, even after submitting the gun for proof. Post some pics and we can sort it out. Sorry for the dealy, I have been in France for a couple of weeks. A terrible job but someone has to do it. |

I'll get back with actual pics (it's not here at my house). In the mean time, here is a pic that I found that is very much like it. I'm going by the things I've indicated with arrows - cylinder, hammer, sear, trigger, stamp. The stamp where I drew the lame castle thing is the Tower of London (kind of like the second picture.
Would the London address on the backstrap be an importer? Why no notched trigger like the Belgians, and why the stamp between the cylinder and the barrel? Oh, and I forgot...no hump on the back strap. Thanks for the input so far...even from the peanut gallery. |

| (no avatar) | If it has the London Tower trademark, that was originally David Bentley's mark. Webley is not believed to have obtained it until mid-1880s, and if your gun is like the one circled, it should date from late 1870s. There was a Bentley-Webley relationship by marriage. I'm also curious re. your source of the photo display you show as some of them are from my website or are examples I've owned: http://www.phelbs.com/HRFTX/tbbd.htm If it's a .45, caliber will be .450 Please do post closeups of your gun. |

Does it SAY "Webley" on it? Does it have the "Flying Bullet" logo? |

Elitist - no. That, and the lack of a serial number, led me to believe that it is not a Webley. It definitely can't be proved to be a Webley. Damn, I forgot to mention the top strap..."British Bulldog". I will definitely get real pics as soon as possible. "Flying Bullet" logo? TBBD - in my original post I suggested the .450 Adams caliber. That would be 1860's to 1870's? As for the source, I don't want to be banned for mentioning other sights, so let's just say it has the words "gun" and "boards" in the .com name. |
